NBC has again dropped the axe on Timeless and officially passed on making a season three.

EW broke the news and it was confirmed by co-creator Shawn Ryan on Twitter who shared his disappointment at the show ending.

"This is a sad day for the writers, actors, crew and especially the viewers of Timeless. We are all extremely proud of what we made and know that it was more than just a show for so many of our fans. It became a passion and a cause for many of them," he wrote.

"We're proud of the impact Timeless had on so many people – the students who embraced history as a result of our show, the people who were inspired by our stories of inclusion and acceptance. We saw your tweets and were inspired by you."

Last year, NBC reversed their decision to cancel the time travel drama after one season and picked it up for season two, and this cancellation news has come with a glimmer of hope for fans as it is reported that there are discussions on a two-hour movie to wrap up storylines.

"If NBC is sincere in wanting a 2 hour movie to give much needed closure to our amazing Timeless fans, we are ready to make it. We don't want the journeys of Lucy, Wyatt, Rufus and the others to end yet," Ryan explained.

Lead stars Abigail Spencer, Matt Lanter and Malcolm Barrett are expected to be released from their contracts by the end of this month.

The second season only averaged 4.2 million viewers, so finding a new home for Timeless could be tricky, but with a hardcore fanbase and after the revivals of Lucifer and Brooklyn Nine-Nine, anything is possible.
