Rita Wilson sets record straight over Tom Hanks ‘heated exchange’ on Cannes red carpet

Rita Wilson has set the record straight after pictures of her and husband Tom Hanks appeared to show them getting into a heated exchange with a member of staff at the Cannes Film Festival.

The Oscar winning actor, 66, and wife Rita Wilson, also 66, both seemed flustered during the incident which took place on the red carpet before a screening of Wes Anderson’s new film Asteroid City, in which Hanks and Wilsom star.

At one point it seemed as though Hanks was pointing in the other man’s face while Wilson was also seen raising a hand as if trying to interupt what the man was saying.

Now, Wilson has taken to social media to set the record straight.

Sharing a picture of the moment, she wrote: “This is called ‘I can’t hear you. People are screaming. What did you say? Where are we supposed to go?’”

She added: “We had a great time. Go see Asteroid City!”

The other man in the pictures, who has since been identified as Vincent Chapalain, shared a similar account on his own social media.

In response to someone asking: “Did Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson get confuse (sic) with security? An explanation?”

He replied: “They just asked me if they should go back to the start of the mat with the rest of the film crew (I’m not security) wink.”

According to a synopsis, Asteroid City, which is set in 1955, sees world-changing events spectacularly disrupt the itinerary of a Junior Stargazer/Space Cadet convention in an American desert town.

Scarlett Johansson, Rupert Friend, Maya Hawke and Bryan Cranston also star.

It was a big night for the movie as, not only did its debut at Cannes mark its world premiere, it is competing for the Palme d’Or prize at the annual film festival.

Previous winners of the accolade have included Parasite, The Tree of Life, The Pianist and Pulp Fiction.
