Tom Hardy is barely recognisable as Al Capone in the trailer for new biopic, Capone.

Directed by Fantastic Four’s Josh Trank, Capone follows the titular gangster during his struggle with early-onset dementia that caused him to reckon with his past crimes.

Hardy looks totally unlike himself as the balding Capone, and is joined in the trailer by a supporting cast including Kyle MacLachlan, Linda Cardellini and Matt Dillon.

Originally titled Fonzo, the film recently changed its name, with Trank revealing on Twitter that the film would be released on video on demand on 12 May.

“Tom Hardy. Capone. Coming MAY 12,” he tweeted, adding: “(Different title. My cut.)”

Hardy had previously been lined up to play the New York gangster in Cicero, the first of a series of films that never got off the ground.

The role is worlds away from Hardy’s most recent project, which will see him return to kids’ TV as he takes over CBeebies to keep the UK’s children entertained during coronavirus lockdown.

In a week of events called “Tom Week”, which runs from 27 April until 1 May, the British actor will read a selection of new bedtime stories from his back garden with his dog Woody by his side.
