Tom Wagner says both he and new manager Chris Davies shared the same ambition for Birmingham City from ‘our first meeting’.

Blues have today confirmed the 39-year-old as their new manager, the third permanent boss of the Knighthead era after Wayne Rooney and Tony Mowbray. Davies arrives having been assistant to Ange Postecoglou at Tottenham and having also worked with Brendan Rodgers at Leicester City.

He has signed a four-year deal and will be charged with both guiding Blues back to the Championship and doing so in a style in keeping with the owners’ oft-stated desire. Blues claimed they spoke to 40 candidates or their representatives before alighting on Davies.

The club’s owner and chairman of the board explained why: “I am delighted to welcome Chris to Blues,” Wagner told the club website. “He is widely respected in the game and fulfils our goal to appoint an ambitious, progressive coach. He is motivated to help redefine the club, the culture, and the playing identity.

“From our first meeting, it was clear we were aligned on values and shared the ambition for Blues. Chris will thrive in the high-performance environment that is being created at the club. He wants to be at Birmingham City and is committed to winning.

“I would like to thank both Tom Brady for his support and involvement, and the Football Leadership Team for their diligent approach in identifying our next Manager. They have conducted a robust process and we have appointed a top operator to take us forward.”
