I, Tonya trailer: Watch Margot Robbie play disgraced skater Tonya Harding

The first trailer for I, Tonya — the highly praised Tonya Harding biopic — has finally landed, offering a closer look at Margot Robbie as the disgraced former figure skater.

“America. They want someone to love, and they want someone to hate,” says Robbie, putting on an American accent. “And the haters always say ‘Tonya, tell the truth.’ There’s no such thing as truth. I mean it’s bullshit.”

Directed by Craig Gillespie and written by Steven Rogers, I, Tonya details how Harding went from being a world-class figure skater to almost being jailed.

Harding shot to international fame after overcoming a difficult childhood and poor background to rise up as one of ice skating's most successful figures. However, on the 6 January, 1994, Harding's major rival, Nancy Kerrigan, was attacked as she stepped off the ice after a practice session.

It was Harding's own husband, Jeff Gillooly, who had hired someone to break Kerrigan's leg so she would be unable to compete in the upcoming Winter Olympics in Lillehammer.

Kerrigan's leg was left only bruised, but Gillooly was soon found out, eventually trying to shift the blame by testifying against his wife. He was jailed, though Harding avoided serving time by pleading guilty to conspiring to hinder prosecution of the attackers.

Robbie has picked up some award buzz for the role, some saying the actor — best known for The Wolf of Wall Street and Suicide Squad — may have a chance at the Oscar for Best Actress.

I, Tonya reaches UK cinemas 23 February 2018.
