I took £20 to one of Britain's 'poshest' towns to see how far I'd get

It's often ranked as one of Britain's "best" towns and tops the charts as one of the "happiest" places to live — but did that mean I could have a lovely day out for £20?

Before my journey, I had been warned about the high costs by friends and family, an admonition I wish I'd paid more heed to. Opting for a multi-storey over a public car park proved my first mistake. Only upon returning did I discover my 3-hour and 20-minute parking cost amounted to £6.20. Harrogate may be a lovely place to live but it lacks a park and ride system.

I then made my way to The Winter Gardens, a Wetherspoon pub widely lauded for its distinctive character. Its spectacular decor captivated me immediately.

I nestled into a spot and via the app, ordered a pint of Pepsi Max and an 8oz Sirloin steak, totalling around £13 — a quality meal indeed.

Even with a satiated appetite and a depleted budget, I opted to indulge in dessert. The choice was clear: the renowned Betty's Tea Room.

After a short wait to enter, it was like stepping into a bygone era with seating areas decorated with refined antiques and staff donned in bow ties and aprons. A hot chocolate and eclair cost me around £12 - surprisingly less than I had expected.

The rest of the day was spent leisurely strolling around Valley Park, where I could ponder on my expenditure whilst taking in the complimentary scenery. The park was brimming with plants, flowers, fountains and offered a host of activities including tennis courts, a skate park and a mini-golf area. I mentally bookmarked what activities to engage in when I revisit with my partner.

So, what's the takeaway from this experience? Maybe it's wiser to visit Harrogate post payday or when you've accumulated a bit more savings. Regardless, this delightful North Yorkshire town is definitely worth a trip. My £20 budget didn't go far, but I have zero regrets!
