Top Five Sports Cities in 2011: A Fan's Opinion

In 2011, many cities in America had very good reasons to celebrate their sports teams.

However, these five cities had, in my opinion, an outstanding year in sports:

Detroit

Detroit has suffered a great deal with the economic recession in the past few years. In 2011, Detroit fans were richly rewarded with several fantastic sports stories. The Detroit Lions are having one of their best seasons in several years with a good chance to make the playoffs. The Detroit Tigers had a strong run in the MLB playoffs, and made it all the way to the American League Championship Series.

Dallas

Dallas makes this list for just one team. The Dallas Mavericks finally won their first NBA championship behind Dirk Nowitzki and Jason Kidd, two highly-respected NBA veterans. Owner Mark Cuban had his faith in his team justified, and they surprised the rest of the sports world with an unlikely victory over the Miami Heat.

New York

Of course New York City would make this list of best sports cities. In the city that never sleeps, sports stories seem to emerge daily. Both the New York Jets and the New York Giants are having exciting seasons. Neither team has been eliminated from playoff contention yet, and it's quite possible that both could make runs deep into the postseason. The New York Yankees were able to make the playoffs again. The New York Knicks became relevant in the NBA once again with the arrival of Carmelo Anthony and Amare Stoudemire.

Boston

Boston should be a perennial contender for sports city of the year, but this year is slightly different. Their top sports team this year was the Boston Bruins. The Bruins won the Stanley Cup for the first time since 1972 in a very dramatic seven-game series. The Red Sox had a successful season, but fizzled out in the last few weeks and missed the playoffs. The New England Patriots, behind Tom Brad,y are once again winning their division and can clinch a playoff spot this week.

Denver

Most of Denver's sports teams didn't have very good seasons, but all of Denver has forgotten about that in the wake of the success of the Denver Broncos this year. From the hiring of local legend John Elway to run the team, Denver fans found a new hope in the team. With the hiring of John Fox and the drafting of defensive superstar Vonn Miller, the Broncos set a successful foundation for the future.

However, it's the emergence of Tim Tebow as the starting quarterback and team leader that has set this town on fire. Football fans have never seen anything like the frenzy that Tebow has brought to Denver.
