Top Gear: Matt LeBlanc’s Brexit Joke Might Strengthen Show’s Chances Of Survival

The Top Gear presenters have faced a lot of criticism in recent weeks, but the BBC motoring show experienced a breakthrough as viewers praised Matt LeBlanc on last night’s episode (Sunday June 19).

The former Friends actor mildly amused viewers as he introduced The Stig with a series of bizarre claims, but it was his joke about the upcoming EU referendum that left viewers in absolute hysterics.

He teased, while introducing the anonymous racing driver’s turn in the Aston Martin Vulcan: “Some say he thinks Brexit is a laxative.”

Before adding: “And for tax purposes he’s classified as a biscuit.”

Bada-bum-tish!

The gag received huge laughs from the studio audience and co-host Chris Evans, but viewers also clearly enjoyed Matt’s humour, with many taking to social media to praise him.

“Brexit is a laxative! The best line on Top Gear so far!” tweeted one fan while another added: “Quote of the week, The Top Gear Stig thinks BREXIT is a laxative.”

Others branded the moment as “comedy gold”, while one viewer gave “kudos to the scriptwriters.”

The joke comes at a crucial time as the show has faced tough criticism over the all-new hosting line-up and slightly different format, resulting in claims that it could be axed.

According to bookmakers Betway (via The Mirror), the long-running motoring series may be scrapped as ratings have continued to plummet since its launch four weeks ago.

But BBC bosses haven’t put the brakes on yet, with Betway offering short odds of 4/7 for Top Gear to return for another series with Chris as host.

Top Gear continues on Sunday on BBC Two at 8pm.
