Torquay United’s pre-season strengthening is continuing apace as the Gulls have made two more signings. Matt Carson and Ed Palmer became the latest additions to Paul Wotton’s new-look 2024/25 squad,

Carson, 20, rose through the ranks at Glentoran before making the switch to Southampton, where his cultured displays at left-back helped The Saints clinch the 2020/21 Premier League South title in 2021.

After appearing for a young Southampton side in their Football League Trophy tie at Forest Green Rovers in August 2022, the young defender went on to sign his first professional contract in March 2023, in addition to receiving several call-ups to Southampton’s B team.

International recognition also came his way in the form of caps at U16, U18 and U19 level with Northern Ireland, before Carson, who has signed a one-year deal, gained his first taste of National League South football during a loan spell with Braintree last term.

It came as former Gulls youngster Palmer made the return to Plaimoor. Having begun his career by progressing through Torquay ’s youth ranks before turning professional, central defender Palmer went on to become a mainstay in the backlines of Tiverton, Taunton and Weymouth amongst others, before a move to Truro City saw him link up with Gulls boss Wotton for the first time.

His form for the Cornish side last term saw him gain many admirers, and having built up a wealth of experience since leaving the English Riviera in 2011, 32 year-old Palmer’s return to where it all began on a one-year deal will now see the imposing centre-half eager to establish himself in The Gulls’ line-up, this time as a senior pro.
