Freak Flash Flood In Surrey Leaves Cars Completely Submerged Underwater

A number of towns and villages in the UK were hit with flash flooding after torrential rain.

Downpours caused severe flooding across Surrey, with heavy rain leaving cars underwater and roads closed.

Thunder and lightning was also reported.

Large parts of the town of Caterham were left underwater by the heavy rain.

Croydon Road in the town was closed as fire crews were called out.

The Met Office had issued a yellow weather warning for rain on Tuesday afternoon, saying there was the potential for more than 20mm of rainfall in one hour.

Twitter user Jimmy Browne posted pictures of the rising waters in Caterham.

He wrote: “You’ll all be pleased to know that it’s stopped raining now.. No road just a river”.

Another image posted by Kyle Molyneux showed a car completely submerged.

Areas around Whyteleafe, Wallington and Purley were also reported to be affected by the flooding.

On Twitter, Surrey Police said: “Lots of calls coming in about the weather on the Eastern side of the county. Please don’t drive through large pools of water. Stay safe”.

There was also flooding in Sutton, south London, where a man was pictured (above) up to his neck in water beside a submerged car near Wallington Station.

It is believed the man did get to safety.
