Mauricio Pochettino said he was "happy to lose in that way" after Tottenham went down 2-1 to Chelsea, with the Argentine insisting his side showed character at Wembley.

Despite being the better of the two teams for much of the London derby clash - which was also Spurs' first Premier League home match of the season in their temporary home - Chelsea left it late to secure a win thanks to Marcos Alonso's brace, which cancelled out Michy Batshuayi's own goal in the 82nd minute.

With Antonio Conte's side now having beaten Spurs twice at Wembley in the space of four months, Pochettino was asked whether he was happy with his team's performance against the champions.

He told reporters after the game: "I am disappointed because we deserved more. I am happy with the performance of the team - the team that created the most chances.

"But the problem was Chelsea was more clinical in front of goal. It was difficult to score.

"We were better than Chelsea. We were a little bit unlucky. Sometimes it's difficult to win.

"I am unhappy but not frustrated. I am happy to lose in that way."

He added on if he thought his side showed character at Wembley: "Yes, of course. We are in a position much better than how we started last season.

"We are higher than last season. It's true because we've lost the first home game but the character and performance was right."
