Tottenham called ‘apathetic’ and ‘rudderless ship’ after Brentford collapse as Ryan Mason reacts
Tottenham are facing yet more criticism after their latest disappointing result saw Brentford beat them 3-1 in north London.
Spurs are now above Brentford by only one point, with each team having one game left this season. Champions League qualification is already impossible for Tottenham, but missing out on European football altogether must now be a genuine fear.
Against Brentford, in Tottenham’s final home game of the season, Harry Kane scored the opening goal. However, Bryan Mbeumo responded with a brace in the second half before Yoane Wissa sealed the win for the visitors late on.
It was Tottenham’s 14th league defeat of the season, their most since 2008-09. Hence, the pressure is on ahead of a summer rebuild.
After the game, acting head coach Ryan Mason admitted Tottenham deserved to lose, despite showing more positive aspects they had failed to produce all season at some stages.
“You have to compete for 95 minutes,” said Mason. “In the first half we played a very good match. 1-0 is a dangerous scoreline, and if you’re not at it for the whole game you get punished.
“The goals we conceded were poor. They were the better team in the second half. They deserved to win.
“When emotions are high it’s probably best not to speak to one another. We’ve been on a [poor] run for a number of months now. The only way to turn that around is winning games and staying together.
“When you come in at this stage of the season there are always difficulties. In the first half, we saw a Tottenham side that we haven’t seen this season, but we weren’t able to sustain it for many different reasons.
“There’s only one way to act, and if we can’t act that way it’s disappointing.”
As for whether Tottenham can qualify for Europe, Mason replied: “I’m not sure. It’s out of our hands now, completely out of our hands now. We’ll have to see what the other teams do and try and win at Leeds.”
The game against Leeds will take place at Elland Road on May 28, bringing the curtain down on a disappointing season for Spurs.
Pundits react to Tottenham defeat
Unsurprisingly, Tottenham are coming in for some harsh words from pundits.
Their former goalkeeper Paul Robinson, for example, told BBC Radio 5 Live: “Tottenham is a rudderless ship.
“It’s been a really disappointing season. We’re now at 55 days since Antonio Conte was sacked, 55 days. They are nowhere closer to getting another manager. They had managers walk away and distance themselves from the job.
“We keep hearing again and again about this world class stadium and training ground – it has to be right on the pitch now.
“They’ve had two win-now managers, Jose Mourinho and Antonio Conte, who both have been backed. That’s not worked. They need a manager who is capable of winning now but is also capable of giving them an identity.”
Ex-England women’s goalkeeper Rachel Brown-Finnis added on Final Score: “Overall, Spurs’ season has been a shambles. Below-par is undercooking it.
“With Antonio Conte leaving, the constant undertone of whether Harry Kane will leave or if he’ll still be at Spurs.
“They just look apathetic throughout the season, they just don’t look collectively like they care enough.”
And former Spurs midfielder Jamie O’Hara simply tweeted: “Same old story bored of it” with an angry emoji.
