Tottenham player ratings vs Crystal Palace: a day to forget for Tanganga and Davies

Tottenham’s perfect start to the season was abruptly ended by Crystal Palace, as Nuno Espirito Santo’s side went down 3-0 in a grim performance at Selhurst Park.

Spurs lost both their starting centre-backs, with Eric Dier hobbling off after 12 minutes before Japhet Tanganga was sent off on the hour for two bookings.

Palace made the most of the extra man, deservedly taking the lead when Wilfried Zaha scored from the penalty spot after Conor Gallagher’s cross struck Ben Davies’ arm.

Substitute Odsonne Edouard made it a dream debut by scoring twice in the final ten minutes to seal Palace’s first win under Patrick Vieira.

Hugo Lloris 5

Owes Dier an apology after his throw led to the centre-half’s injury. Saved well from Conor Gallagher in the first half but flapped at more than one cross, causing panic in the box and could have got a stronger hand to Edouard’s second.

Emerson Royal 5

The debutant struggled to cope with Wilfried Zaha, notably for Palace’s second goal which came when the winger made easy progress down his flank. Was also at fault for Odsonne’s second, as the forward made a yard and fired past Lloris.

Japhet Tanganga 4

Deservedly sent off for two reckless fouls within minutes. He was lucky not to go for a fiery clash with Zaha before recklessly lunging in on Jordan Ayew. It spoiled a decent performance, this time in his preferred position.

Eric Dier 6

His fine start to the season came to an abrupt end after clashing with Ayew when reaching for Lloris’ hospital pass. Looked in real discomfort as he was helped down the touchline by a medic, clutching his thigh. A blow for Spurs.

Sergio Reguilon 5

Did well to track Gallagher and block the forward’s shot in the first half and cleared a dangerous cross off the line after the break. But generally loose in possession and doesn’t look anything like the player who adapted so seamlessly to English football last season.

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg 5

Kept it safe as part of a dysfunctional midfield, which offered nothing going forward. Ultimately failed to protect the defence as Spurs crumbled.

Oliver Skipp 5

Sprayed one superb pass to Royal but was otherwise too safe with his distribution. Looked sluggish but did pick up a knock on international duty.

Harry Winks 5

Sacrificed when Tanganga was sent off, hinting at his place in the midfield pecking order. Was not alone in offering little in the way of forward momentum in a grim Spurs display.

Dele Alli 6

Played a more advanced role but his most notable contribution was a flying block to deny Ayew. At least put in a shift, pressing constantly.

Lucas Moura 6

Spurs’ brightest spark – which wasn’t saying much. Always looking to beat a man and create a yard and had the visitors only shot on target (!), straight at Vicente Guaita.

Harry Kane 4

Completed just 11 successful passes and had just two more touches than Winks, who played just an hour. A spectator, albeit starved of service.

Joe Rodon (Dier 12’) 5

Initially did well to repel Palace’s crosses but could not prevent the second-half rout.

Ben Davies (Winks 60’) 4

Conceded the decisive penalty when Gallagher’s cross struck his arm – and also at sea for the other goals. In his defence, he was thrust into a difficult situation in an unfavoured position. May even have to start at centre-half against Chelsea.

Not used: Gollini, Doherty, Gil, Ndombele, Scarlett, Omole, Markanday.
