Tottenham ready for Champions League glory! Harry Kane delighted to 'do Mauricio Pochettino justice'

Harry Kane says Tottenham wanted to do manager Mauricio Pochettino justice in the Nou Camp on Tuesday.

Substitute Lucas Moura’s 85th-minute tap-in from Kane’s cross earned Spurs a 1-1 draw with Barcelona and booked their place in the knockouts — after Inter Milan were held at home by PSV Eindhoven by the same scoreline.

Spurs looked down and out after taking one point from their first three Champions League group games but remarkable late shows against Inter and PSV at home, as well as Tuesday’s, sealed one of the competition’s great turnarounds.

Pochettino has had to contend with a summer without any signings, a behind-schedule new stadium, supporter unrest and a spate of injuries but he has guided the club to their best-ever start in the Premier League and they will now hope to stage a Champions League last-16 tie at their new £1billion home — whose opening date is unknown.

“I can’t speak highly enough of him,” said Kane. “He’s a fantastic manager, a fantastic man. With him, it’s always about hard work and belief. That’s what he said to us before the game and at half-time: just believe, bring energy, work. And we’ll get the reward.

“You just want to perform for him, work hard for him, win for him. He’s very passionate. You can tell sometimes he wants to be out there himself, putting in tackles, running about.

“You respond to that. On nights like that, big occasions, you just want to do him justice. We’re buzzing, he was very happy in the changing room. We should enjoy it. But I know him — he’ll be focused on Saturday and trying to win against Burnley.

“As performances under this manager go, it’s right up there. We’ve had some good results, especially away in the Champions League. But last night it was all or nothing. We had to perform or we were going out of the competition. We didn’t win the game but we did more than enough to go through.”

After failing to get out of the group two years ago, Spurs were narrowly beaten 4-3 on aggregate by Juventus in the round-of-16 last season, despite dominating most of the two legs.

Kane says the time has come for the club to perform in the knockouts and believes they have proved they can match any team in Europe. “It’s another step forward, it’s a massive achievement for the club but it’s important we carry on,” he said.

“We want to go as far as we can in this competition. This will give us belief that we can do that. The manner in which we played, the chances we created shows we can be as good as anyone on our day.

“There’s no bigger game than Barcelona away. If we get them again in the latter stages — or Real Madrid or Juve again, like last year — we definitely know that kind of performance is in there. It’s time to step it up and show we can do it in the knockout stages.

“Who knows how far we can go? It’s about belief. We’ve done the hard bit of getting through the group. Now it’s about getting as far as we can.”

Kane also refused to rule out another Premier League title push, pointing out that Spurs always click into gear over the hectic Christmas schedule.

“Not many people are talking about Tottenham,” he said.

“We just get on with the job and tick along until the New Year and Christmas and then give it a right good push. The Champions League is the same.

“A lot of people had written us off after three games. We came out of that, showed people the character we’ve got in the team.”

The last-16 draw takes place on Monday, and Kane added: “We’ve shown over the last few years that we’ve earned respect among the big teams in Europe.

“The difference between us and Barca, Real Madrid and Juve is that they win big titles year after year and that’s where we want to get.

“The only way to do that is to prove it in the big games. But teams respect us and whoever we get in the next round will know they have a tough game ahead.”
