Spurs given extra 48 hours to weigh up Wembley return for next season

Tottenham will not know the location of their first home game of next season when the Premier League announces the 2018-19 fixtures on Thursday.

The Football Association have given Spurs an extra 48 hours — until Friday — to decide if they want to renew their tenancy at Wembley. It is the second time the club has postponed the decision.

Spurs were due to tell the FA on Wednesday if they wish to play their first home games of 2018-19 at the national stadium before moving into their new home. The deadline had already been pushed back from the end of May.

The venue for Spurs’ home games is set to be listed as ‘to be confirmed’ on the official fixture list.

Around 3,000 contractors are working around the clock to try to finish the £850million project on schedule, but doubts remain about when it will be ready, even after a run of away games and the September international break.

The Premier League will allow Spurs to reverse fixtures, meaning they will play three consecutive matches away from home when the season starts on August 11. The League made similar allowances for West Ham in 2016-17 and Liverpool in 2017-18.

If Spurs believe their new 62,062-seat stadium will still not be complete after England’s friendly against Switzerland on September 11, they may play one or two home games at Wembley, their home last season.

To play in two different ‘home’ stadiums in the same season, Spurs would need permission from the Premier League board of outgoing chief executive Richard Scudamore and non-executive directors Kevin Beeston and Claudia Arney.

It is understood that Tottenham are relaxed about obtaining the go-ahead, even if it could provoke anger from rival clubs.

Spurs have already sold tens of thousands of season tickets for the new stadium and there is concern among fan groups that returning to Wembley for a short period could result in significant problems.
