Tottenham star Christian Eriksen: 'I thought it was over... I'm one of the luckiest guys on the planet'

Tottenham’s momentary heartbreak of being knocked out of the Champions League has led star Christian Eriksen to call himself ‘one of the luckiest guys on the planet’.

Mauricio Pochettino’s men were in a deadlock with Manchester City at 4-4 on aggregate when Raheem Sterling scored deep in injury time to send the Etihad Stadium into raptures.

Eriksen was seemingly at fault for that goal after conceding possession cheaply in the lead-up.

VAR intervened though, to perhaps its most impactful moment to date in England, and ruled that goal out due to Sergio Aguero being deemed offside.

The Danish international told BT Sport: “I think I must be one of the luckiest guys on the planet today.

“With the last one they scored, I thought it was over. Thank God the ref gave offside.

“The whole game was a roller coaster, it was goals, goals, goals, goals and drama everywhere.

“It was a fun game to play but I’m lucky we’re on the good side.”

Son Heung-min, who scored three of Spurs’ goals over the two legs echoed Eriksen’s sentiments.

"I have never seen something like this, It was tough and crazy but we are very proud of our team-mates,” the South Korean forward told BT Sport.

“It was madness. Sometimes you are annoyed with VAR but today it is thank you. We fought together for 90 minutes.

“We showed unbelievable character and fight."

Eriksen is looking forward to facing his former club Ajax – conquerors of Real Madrid and Juventus – in the semi-finals.

He added on BT Sport: “We saw the game yesterday and they went through so it would have been a fairy tale to play them and now it is a fairy tale.

“The first 10 minutes of this game and the last five was fairy tale stuff. So it’ll be fun to go back to play in the Arena.”
