Tottenham vs Chelsea - LIVE!

Chelsea have one foot in the final of the Carabao Cup, with Tottenham needing to launch a memorable comeback tonight if they are to reach Wembley.

The Blues were dominant in last week’s semi-final first leg at Stamford Bridge, running out 2-0 winners thanks to Kai Havertz’s strike and an unfortunate own goal from Ben Davies, and they could easily have had more.

After that game, Antonio Conte spoke of the huge gap in quality between the sides and this week he has ramped up the pressure on the Spurs’ hierarchy as he outlines his plans for the January transfer window.

Both sides made smooth progress in the FA Cup at the weekend, Chelsea hammering non-league Chesterfield and Spurs surviving an early scare to eventually cruise past Morecambe and into the Fourth Round.

FT: Tottenham 0-1 Chelsea

21:42 , Malik Ouzia

Chelsea win 3-0 on aggregate.

It’s Chelsea who are off to Wembley, and in good style, too.

Dan Kilaptrick is at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium

21:39 , Malik Ouzia

The game was paused for several minutes although there was no announcement from the PA system to explain the situation. A number of stewards and medical staff are still gathered halfway up the South Stand after fans in the Park Lane desperately gestured for attention

21:36 , Malik Ouzia

90+2 mins: Andre Marriner signals and we are back underway.

21:34 , Malik Ouzia

90 mins: We’re still not sure exactly what’s going on and it’d be unwise to speculate. In the meantime, the board has just gone up to signal six added minutes, though of course we haven’t started them yet.

21:30 , Malik Ouzia

87 mins: Hmm. The game has been paused here because it looks like there’s some sort of incident in the stand behind the goal at the far end of the ground.

More as we get it...

21:28 , Malik Ouzia

85 mins: Tottenham have been better this half - but there has been little doubt as to who will be in the final from the moment Rudiger scored.

The feeling is that if Chelsea needed to step up a level, they could have done just that. The fact is, they didn’t need to. Job done.

21:23 , Malik Ouzia

79 mins: Harry Winks has got a taste for a goal after that one at the weekend - which he claims he meant - but this is a wild effort. Not sure if it’s higher or wider but it’s nowhere near the goal.

That might be him done because Oliver Skipp is being readied.

21:16 , Malik Ouzia

72 mins: So into the final twenty minutes of the tie we go and Thomas Tuchel has sent on the likes of Thiago Silva and Marcos Alonso to try and see this out in calmer fashion, the Blues switching to a back five.

Bryan Gil and Ryan Sessegnon are both on for Spurs.

Dan Kilpatrick is at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium

21:12 , Malik Ouzia

Spurs are, at least, putting up a spirited fight and creating some chances with a quarter of the tie remaining. As superior as Chelsea have been in both legs, Spurs may look back and reflect that they had their chances – but given the Blues three soft goals.

GOAL DISALLOWED!

21:08 , Malik Ouzia

Yep. More VAR woe for Spurs - though it’s the correct decision again.

Lucas slides in Kane as Chelsea are caught all over the place at the back, but they’re so all over the place that Kepa is higher up the pitch than Kane as he lashes home and the effort is chalked for offside.

James Robson is at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium

21:05 , Malik Ouzia

This has been a decent spell for Tottenham. They are applying a concerted period of pressure on Chelsea and Emerson has just forced a good save from Kepa.

It doesn’t really feel like it will provide a goal - but it is giving the home fans something to cheer.

21:04 , Malik Ouzia

60 mins: Excellent from Kepa again!

Davies takes advantage of a slip from Azpilicueta to deliver from the left and Emerson Royal has drifted in from the opposite flank to meet it but the Chelsea ‘keeper is there to push it away.

No penalty!

21:02 , Malik Ouzia

58 mins: Yep. To be honest, Marriner looks a little embarrassed as he jogs back from reviewing the incident on the pitchside monitor and tells the Chelsea players they were right to be livid with him for that one.

20:59 , Malik Ouzia

56 mins: Penalty to Tottenham!

I think he’s got this one wrong as well!

In fact, this is an abysmal refereeing decision from Andre Marriner. Kane does brilliant to lead a Spurs break, beating two men and then playing in Lucas, but Kepa is out smartly to nick the ball away cleanly. I’m certain this’ll be overturned.

20:57 , Malik Ouzia

53 mins: Antonio Conte has his head in his hands. The pitch opens up nicely for Spurs it should be a simple pass from Winks to put Kane through on goal but he gets both the power and the direction wrong and the opening is gone.

20:52 , Malik Ouzia

48 mins: Chelsea are straight back on the attack and Ben Davies isn’t sure what’s behind him as ne nervously heads Hudson-Odoi’s cross behind.

No surprise, Rudiger is the man to meet the subsequent corner but this time Tanganga does enough to stop him getting over his header and it flies over Gollini’s bar.

KICK-OFF!

20:49 , Malik Ouzia

We are back underway - no changes for either side.

Here’s that moment Gollini won’t want to see again...

20:45 , Malik Ouzia

James Robson’s half-time thoughts

20:38 , Malik Ouzia

Rudiger is having one of those games where he is virtually unplayable. Created two of Chelsea’s best chances before opening the scoring and then outmuscled Kane to deny a shooting chance.

But it wouldn’t be Rudiger if there wasn’t the odd heart-in-mouth moment and when Hojbjerg went down in the box, it looked like he had given Spurs a lifeline.

But you know it is your day when even those decisions go your way. He brought the Spurs man down outside the box - which was more a case of luck than judgement - and the penalty was overturned. That could have made for an interesting second half.

HT: Tottenham 0-1 Chelsea

Boos from the home crowd at the break. Chelsea are almost there.

20:30 , Malik Ouzia

45+1 mins: There’ll be three minutes added...

20:29 , Malik Ouzia

44 mins: It’s Lo Celso who takes the free-kick and he tries to lift it delicately over the wall but, predictably, it’s Rudiger in the wall who stands tall.

No penalty!

20:27 , Malik Ouzia

43 mins: Decision overruled!

VAR decides the foul took place outside the box and, crucially, did not continue into the area. Just a free-kick on the edge.

20:25 , Malik Ouzia

40 mins: Penalty to Tottenham!

Hmm, will this stand?

There’s no doubt that Rudiger fouls Hojbjerg as he slides in, but I’m not sure it’s inside the box. He catches the Dane outside at first and keeps sliding into the box but it looks like it’s then Hojbjerg tripping over his own feet that sends him down inside the area.

20:24 , Malik Ouzia

39 mins: Once or twice Chelsea have given it away sloppily and given Spurs a glimmer of an opening but they just haven’t been able to take it.

The latest of them sees Rudiger get back sharply to get his body across Kane and muscle him out of it.

20:19 , Malik Ouzia

34 mins: They’re not in the ascendancy for long, though. Werner jinks his way to the corner of the box and then clips into the middle for Lukaku, who may as well not be being marked by Davies, but the Belgian’s glancing header doesn’t have enough direction on it to find the far corner.

20:18 , Malik Ouzia

32 mins: That’s a bit more like it!

First, Doherty delivers for Kane, who is crowded out as he tries to get a shot off but the ball only breaks as far as Hojbjerg. His deflected effort is shaping dangerously towards the top corner but it drifts wide of it with Kepa beaten.

Then, from the resulting corner, Spurs win the near-post flick and Kane is steaming in round the back-post. He ends up in the goal as he slides in but doesn’t take the ball with him. Any sort of contact and it was in.

20:14 , Malik Ouzia

29 mins: Spurs have hardly touched the ball in the Chelsea half since that goal. Just as at the Bridge a week ago, Chelsea are doing an excellent job of penning their opposition in, absolutely bossing this game.

James Robson is at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium

20:12 , Malik Ouzia

Chelsea fans in the away end are singing about Wembley already - and for good reason. This tie is surely over.

Tottenham’s job was to stay alive for as long as possible. Going 1-0 down inside 18 minutes was not in the script. They need to give the home fans something to cling to and make sure this does not end up a very long and painful night - as looks like being the case at the moment.

20:09 , Malik Ouzia

23 mins: Chelsea are purring now and the life has been sucked out of this ground. Hudson-Odoi nips in off the left and tests Gollini with a low curler that bounces awkwardly in front of the ‘keeper as he palms it round the post.

Dan Kilpatrick is at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium

20:07 , Malik Ouzia

Gollini’s part in the goal will massively increase the scrutiny on Conte’s decision not to start Hugo Lloris. Spurs were 2-0 down from the first leg and in the midst of a tough run, granted, but this is still a semi-final against their rivals, so not playing the club captain is highly questionable.

GOAL! Tottenham 0-1 Chelsea | Antonio Rudiger 18’

20:03 , Malik Ouzia

That might be that!

It’s a grim moment for Pierluigi Gollini, who comes to meet a corner and gets nowhere near it, not strong enough, not aggressive enough.

Ruiger is plenty of both and beats him to it to power into the vacated net and Chelsea are on their way.

20:01 , Malik Ouzia

15 mins: The Chelsea pressure is mounting here. They work it nicely to get Werner in behind in the right channel and though his pull-back is missed by Hudson-Odoi, it runs through for Sarr to hit and only a good block from Lo Celso prevents Gollini being called into action again.

19:57 , Malik Ouzia

11 mins: Big save!

One long ball is Spurs’ undoing as Lukaku holds off Davies and gets his shot away but Gollini does brilliantly to stand up and block. There’s a hairy moment as the ball rebounds straight onto Sanchez and back towards the goal but it’s quickly apparent that it’s drifting wide.

That could’ve been tie over...

James Robson is at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium

19:56 , Malik Ouzia

That was actually a decent chance for Werner. He had to move his feet quickly, but with Gollini off his line, he should at least have hit the target and made the keeper work. Instead, he went for the lob and missed the target.

19:54 , Malik Ouzia

9 mins: Not a bad effort this, from Timo Werner, who reacts instinctively to pounce on a poor defensive header from Sanchez and tries to lift it over Gollini. It has the ‘keeper scrambling but there’s too much on it.

19:53 , Malik Ouzia

7 mins: A real waste from Harry Kane, who powers straight into the wall. Can’t afford to waste openings like that when you’re chasing a two-goal deficit.

19:52 , Malik Ouzia

6 mins: Lo Celso has found a couple of pockets around the edge of the Chelsea box already and Christensen is too eager to try and nick it, going through the back of the Argentine to give Spurs a free-kick in an excellent position.

19:49 , Malik Ouzia

4 mins: Already, Sarr has popped up high on the left flank and seen a decent-looking ball well headed away in the middle. Chelsea have settled nicely here.

James Robson is at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium

19:46 , Malik Ouzia

Chelsea look like they are lining up with a back four, with Sarr at left back. Given the line-up, there was the potential to play Azpilicueta and Hudson-Odoi as wingbacks - but that is not how they’ve set up at the start.

KICK-OFF!

19:45 , Malik Ouzia

We are underway in north London...

19:42 , Malik Ouzia

Right then, the teams are in the tunnel. Harry Kane is Spurs captain for the night with Hugo Lloris on the bench, Cesar Azpilicueta will lead Chelsea out as usual.

Where the game will be won and lost: Stopping Lukaku

19:34 , Malik Ouzia

Nobody knows better than Conte just how dangerous a fit and firing Romelu Lukaku can be.

The Belgian has never looked better than under the Italian at Inter Milan.

Had Conte succeeded in bringing him to Chelsea when in charge, history could have looked a lot different.

For the all the controversy surrounding Lukaku in recent weeks, it has been somewhat overlooked that he has been back among the goals.

Since returning from an ankle injury last month, he has scored four in his last six games. And he would love to continue that streak against his old boss tonight.

Where the game will be won and lost: Can Spurs stay in tie for long enough?

19:19 , Malik Ouzia

One goal for Chelsea and it is surely all over for Spurs.

If they can keep it tight for long enough, then a goal could rattle Chelsea’s nerves.

There are still serious questions over Tuchel’s side following their December slump — and keeping clean sheets has been an issue, as has been conceding late goals.

So if Spurs can stay in the tie heading into the closing stages, it will be a real test of Chelsea’s mettle.

But Conte’s side cannot afford to concede cheap goals like they did in the first leg.

Silva, Kante back on bench

19:08 , Malik Ouzia

Chelsea, meanwhile, have made five changes to the side that started at the Bridge last week, perhaps most intriguing being that Timo Werner starts, joining Romelu Lukaku and Mason Mount in an attack that Blues fans have been waiting a long old time to see.

Meanwhile, N’Golo Kante and Thiago Silva are both back in the squad after their Covid diagnosis, but both are only among the substitutes.

Ndombele axed

18:58 , Malik Ouzia

Antonio Conte has left Tanguy Ndombele out of Tottenham’s matchday squad for tonight’s game.

The French midfielder was booed by home supporters during the FA Cup game with Morecambe at the weekend as he took an age to leave the pitch when substituted and he has not named in the matchday 8 amid speculation over his future.

Meanwhile, Matt Doherty gets another chance to impress out of position at left-wing-back, while Hugo Lloris is left on the bench as Pierluigi Gollini gets another start between the sticks.

Standard Sport prediction

17:59 , Malik Ouzia

Chelsea’s ruthless edge shone through in last season’s Champions League run and it is clear to see that Tottenham are far from the finished product under Conte. With the aggregate score the only one that counts, the Blues should see this one through.

If the tie is level at full-time, extra-time and penalties will be used with away goals not a factor in this competition.

A 1-1 draw (3-1 to Chelsea on aggregate).

Chelsea team news

17:47 , Malik Ouzia

Thomas Tuchel may be able to welcome N’Golo Kante and Thiago Silva back to the Chelsea team after their Covid-19 absence. Reece James and Trevoh Chalobah (both hamstring) are set to miss out along with Ben Chilwell (knee) and Edouard Mendy (AFCON).

Cesar Azpilicueta (thigh) should be fit while the Blues could continue with youngsters Lewis Hall and Harvey Vale in their squad after runouts against Chesterfield.

Tottenham team news

17:38 , Malik Ouzia

Antonio Conte made eight changes to his regular XI for the win over Morecambe, the nature of which suggests he will return to his starters on Wednesday night.

Son Heung-min (leg) and Cristian Romero (hamstring) are out with Steven Bergwijn (foot) and Eric Dier (illness) doubts after missing the weekend’s game.
