Tourist Death Reported After Volcano Erupts on Italy's Stromboli Island

A tourist was reported to have died after a volcano on the Italian island of Stromboli erupted on July 3, local media said, citing officials.

ANSA reported that a person was killed as they hiked to the summit of the volcano. The eruption also resulted in a number of fires in nearby areas, the report said.

Italy’s National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology reported the plume of gas and ash from the eruption extended for a distance of around one mile into the sky.
