Spain's national weather agency (Aemet) has issued the Canary Islands with weather warnings as they face stormy conditions. The much-loved holiday destinations have been placed under yellow and amber alerts.

The Spanish government declared a state of pre-alert for ‘coastal phenomena’ at the start of the week, with ‘bad sea conditions’ expected. The 'state of pre-alert' has been maintained by the government with strong winds continuing to hit the holiday hotspots.

Lanzarote has been issued an amber coastal warning, which is in force today (Thursday) as sea swells of up to 6m are predicted. Yellow coastal warnings remain in place for the other islands, including Tenerife and Gran Canaria. The regional authorities have advised residents and visitors to exercise extreme caution, particularly in coastal areas exposed to strong winds and rough seas.

Forecasting for today, Aemet said: “Moderate to strong northeasterly wind, stronger on peaks and northwest and southeast slopes, where very strong gusts are likely, and not ruling out locally in Lanzarote and Fuerteventura.”
