British tourists fled from the sea in terror after spotting an eight-foot shark in shallow waters on a holiday beach.

Swimmers scrambled for safety when the shark suddenly appeared among crowds near Magaluf in Majorca.

Parents were seen grabbing their young children from the waves after spotting the huge fish swimming towards them after midday on Saturday.

Photographs taken by shocked onlookers show the beast swimming towards groups of travellers including children in lilos.

Lifeguards raised red flags to clear holidaymakers out of the sea, before the Guardia Civil were seen searching the area.

Helicopters reportedly circled overhead to track the shark, while others sounded the alarm by shouting: “Everyone out of the water.”

Local media reported that the predator had been captured by Sunday afternoon. It is said to have suffered injuries when it was brought to shore and was put down.
