Booking a holiday in Venice might have you dreaming of savouring an authentic Italian pizza by the picturesque canals, but tourists are being advised to think twice before ordering pizza in the city - and the reason is quite bizarre.

Travel influencer Erin Fang, known as @thelittlebasketco on TikTok with more than 269,000 followers, shared a video detailing "things I wish social media told me before visiting Venice".

"First up, do not rely on the food and definitely not the pizza," Erin advised. She pointed out that wood-burning ovens are banned in Venice, which affects the taste of the pizza, saying it "just lacks that extra flavour".

And Erin isn't the first person to raise this issue. Travel guide site Culture Trip notes: "It's actually quite hard to find good pizza in Venice because wood-burning ovens are historically banned for fire safety reasons. Unless it's one of the few places that do it right, most pizza restaurants are tourist traps."

Erin also cautioned that pizza isn't the only culinary let-down in Venice. "Pizza or not, set your expectations low when it comes to the food, because the majority of restaurants here are insanely commercialised," she remarked. However, she did recommend trying cicchetti, small plates of local Venetian fare.

Erin's video went viral, amassing more than 81,000 likes. However, the comments section was brimming with people defending Venetian cuisine.

One user commented: "We had awesome food in Venice, you gotta go away from the more main areas and find the little places." Another joined in: "I absolutely LOVED Venice. We didn't do any touristy stuff we just got lost in all the little alleyways and ate at little hole in the walls."
