A driver has been arrested following a police chase in east London.

At approximately 1.25am on Thursday, officers pulled alongside a “suspicious” car in Tower Hamlets and told the driver to turn off the engine.

The driver then sped off and was pursued by officers and a police helicopter along Bethnal Green Road.

During the chase, the car collided with several pieces of “street furniture”, the police said before the vehicle came to a stop on St Stephens Roads near the junction with Roman Road.

After police chased the 27-year-old driver on foot, the man was arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving, failing to stop for the police, and theft of a motor vehicle.

The female passenger of the car was injured and taken to a nearby hospital. Her injuries have been deemed as non-life threatening.

The Met’s Directorate of Professional Standards has been informed and enquiries continue.
