Tracee Ellis Ross has revealed how her journey to love and embrace her natural hair over the years has mirrored the relationship she has with herself.

The Black-ish star and daughter of Diana Ross posted a series of pictures on Instagram, documenting how her hair has changed over the years, from being a teenager up to the present day.

The 47 year-old revealed how she 'didn't understand' her hair when she was young and therefore it accidentally ended up 'fried' as she 'tried everything under the sun to make it do what I thought it should'.

'But,' she said, 'once I began listening to my hair and started figuring out what it liked, my true curl pattern emerged.' She added that her hair was healthy and 'POPPIN' by the time she appeared in hit TV show Girlfriends, which she starred in from 2000-2008.

Ross – who recently spoke about being happily single – talked about how her hair texture has 'evolved' as she has matured. She said she's now starting to go grey, which has not only changed the texture further, but the dye she uses to cover it up has loosened her natural curl pattern.

After describing this part of the ageing process as 'evidence of my life and my years,' she goes on to admit that she's not quite ready to embrace her greys just yet. But she's sure it'll be 'exciting' when she finally does, and that she now knows her hair inside and out.

'Taking the time to accept, understand and love my hair mirrors the relationship I have with myself,' she says, explaining that she's grown to appreciate her hair in 'all of its seasons. Because hair love IS self love.'
