Tracey Emin has claimed that she was sexually assaulted by a well-known female artist.

Emin, 54, recalls the time she was ‘much younger’ and at a party when the assault happened. The former Turner Prize nominee spoke to Kenny Goss about her experience, while being honoured by MTV’s Staying Alive Foundation at their Re:Define event in Dallas, Texas.

‘The irony is it happened to be a woman that grabbed hold of my crotch, slammed me against a wall and I threatened to punch her lights out. I grabbed hold of her,’ she began, after the interview was published in the Sun.

‘Everybody said you can’t do that because she was a famous artist, I was much younger and said, “Yeah, I can — she can’t touch me like that”.’

Emin said that it doesn’t matter what the sex of the person is and that it’s all based on positions of power: ‘It’s the same thing, what’s the difference if it’s a woman’s doing it or a man doing it? If it’s someone in a higher position of power or someone who thinks they’re going to get away with it because of who they are, that’s what the problem is.’

Despite not naming her attacker, it adds to the #MeToo debate and has given people from all walks of life – famous or otherwise – to speak out about times they were sexually harassed or assaulted at some point in their lives.

Emin’s project made headlines last month when she unveiled 60 handmade bronze bird sculptures – which were perched above doorways and on poles – as part of her new instillation called The Distance of Your Heart.

Just today Emin showed off her latest which was a 20-metre-long work called I Want My Time With You, which is part of the Terrace Wires installation programme at St Pancras International, London.
