Tractor driver airlifted to hospital after serious crash in South Devon

A tractor driver has been flown to hospital after a serious crash on a Devon A-road. Emergency services, including an air ambulance, rushed to the A379 near Modbury after a tractor rolled over, trapping the driver inside the vehicle.

The incident took place shortly before 3.30pm today (Monday, October 21). A spokesperson for Devon and Cornwall Police confirmed a man has been taken to hospital, though the severity of his injuries is not currently known.

The driver had been trapped inside the tractor following the collision and, together, paramedics and fire crews worked to free him from the overturned vehicle. He was then taken to a nearby air ambulance which had arrived at the scene.

Devon and Cornwall Police said: "Police were called to the A379 near Aveton Gifford at around 3.25pm on Monday 21 October following reports of an overturned tractor.

"Ambulance and fire were also both called and the road closed in one direction. The tractor driver has been taken to hospital. The extent of his injuries are not yet known."

The A379 remains closed in both directions following the crash. Traffic monitor Inrix reports: "A379 in both directions closed due to overturned tractor from Ashford turn off ( Aveton Gifford ) to Harraton Cross Junction (Modbury)."

Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service said: "Two Fire Engines and a Heavy Rescue vehicle, were all sent to a report of a tractor that had rolled over. On arrival crews confirmed that one person was physically trapped in the tractor that was on its side, on the road.

"Crews assisted Ambulance crews in removing the casualty. Crews then assisted Ambulance crews in moving the casualty to a nearby Air Ambulance."
