Tragedy as body of young baby found in field near M61 motorway bridge

The body of a young baby has been found on a field near the M61 motorway.

A major police scene is in place after emergency services were called to the tragic incident this afternoon (November 20). The entrance to the field in Little Hulton, near to the motorway bridge, has been taped off and a forensic tent has also been reported by eyewitnesses.

Police confirmed it is in attendance at Ashtons Field and said the remains of a young baby have been found on Ravenscraig Road. An ambulance was reportedly seen in attendance alongside police at 1pm today, the M.E.N reports.

It's understood the remains were found in an area between Ashtons Field and the rear of industrial buildings on Ravenscraig Road. The infant has been described by police as a 'young baby'.

Police have been in attendance since then and a number of uniformed officers are standing guard at the cordon. A press conference has been called following the tragic discovery.

Chief Superintendent Neil Blackwood will speak to reporters later today. It's expected the press conference will take place from 5.30pm.
