A soldier found dead at a Yorkshire Army base took his own life, a coroner has concluded.

Rifleman Sangam Rai, a married man who was born in Nepal, was found in a room at Munster Barracks at Catterick Garrison in North Yorkshire on December 8 last year.

North Yorkshire coroner Catherine Cundy concluded that Sanham had taken his own life. The conclusion followed an 'inquest in writing' which does not involve a public hearing in court.

In a Record of Inquest, the coroner said: "On the 8th of December 2023 Rifleman Sangam Rai was found in a collapsed and unresponsive state, suspended from a ligature in a locker in Room 115, Block 25, Munster Barracks, Waithwith Lane, Catterick Garrison, North Yorkshire.

"Attempts at resuscitation were unsuccessful and he was pronounced dead at the scene at 08.50 hours on the same date."

In a separate inquest earlier this week, a coroner heard from the family of Nicholas 'Nicki' Hart, 33, who hanged himself at Catterick Garrison in February 2022.

His family believe his death "could have been prevented". The inquest found there were missed opportunities to support him.

The inquest heard Highlander Hart had been drinking heavily after the death of his friend, Ryan Mackenzie, at the garrison the previous August. He developed post traumatic stress disorder after a 2012 tour of Afghanistan, the inquest heard.
