By now, you’ve heard all about Gen Z’s hatred of side parts. While the supposed “outrage” is completely blown out of proportion — trust me, Gen Z doesn’t actually care that much — one thing remains true: middle parts are indeed trending. And why not try one for yourself?
In the latest episode of Pretty Beautiful, video producer Lisa Azcona shows us how to train a middle part. If you’ve been a long-time side part lover, training your hair when trying out a new part is a necessity — and there’s a way to do it right.
If you want to train a new part, Lisa says to first massage your scalp with a brush, brushing your hair backward and forward by focusing on the scalp. She recommends using a paddle brush or a wide-tooth comb for this scalp TLC.
“Your hair has a memory, so you want to start with a clean slate,” Lisa says.
Next, use a rattail comb to create your new hair part. Take time to define your new part with the tail-end of the comb, making the part super straight.
If your hair is very resistant to creating a new part, use some non-crease clips to hold your hair in place while getting ready. This will force your hair into shape. Lisa also recommends using hairspray or texturizing spray to hold your hair in place, which can add some extra grit to your look.
Now, if your hair is being totally stubborn, heat could be the answer. Lisa uses a straightening brush to coax her hair into place, virtually ironing her part into submission.
“Depending on your hair thickness and texture, you may not see results overnight,” Lisa advises. “You should definitely implement these techniques over the course of several days or weeks, so your hair can adjust accordingly.”
