Trains cancelled and police close bridge in Merseyside town
Police have sealed off a bridge and Northern have announced the trains have been cancelled from Southport as emergency services descended onto the rail line this morning, Saturday, November 23. Police have blocked off Sussex Road between Tithebarn Road and St Luke's Road in the Merseyside town, with police thought to have been at the scene since around 9.30am, the ECHO understands.
One eyewitness saw three police vans rushing to the scene, with Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service also attending. The witness also confirmed North West Ambulance Service is currently in attendance.
A spokesperson for MFRS: "Fire crews were called to Southport Railway Club on Sussex Road this morning to assist Merseyside Police. Two fire engines arrived on scene at 9.57am and on arrival it was deemed that no fire service action was required. The crews left the scene at 10.07am."

A Northern Rail spokesperson confirmed trains have been cancelled between Southport and Wigan Wallgate. The operator said: "Due to the emergency services dealing with an incident between Southport and Wigan Wallgate the line is blocked.
"Train services running to and from these stations will be cancelled. Emergency services are at the location. Customers at Southport can use Merseyrail services."
Merseyrail confirmed services between Southport and Liverpool Central are running as usual following an earlier cancelled service due to a train fault. British Transport Police has been contacted for comment.
