One of the most incredible transfer window’s in history closed on Tuesday night with Chelsea signing Saul Niguez.

The midfielder has joined from Atletico Madrid on an initial loan with an option to buy for £30million next summer.

However, the Blues’ bid to sign France defender Jules Kounde failed to come off after Sevilla rejected what they have described as an "unsatisfactory" offer.

Arsenal, meanwhile, have agreed an £17.2million deal to buy defender Takehiro Tomiyasu from Bologna, while Tottenham have confirmed the £25.7m signing of Barcelona right-back Emerson on a five-year contract.

Cristiano Ronaldo has officially completed his sensational return to Manchester United today after passing a medical and penning a lucrative two-year contract, though Kylian Mbappe is one superstar staying put.

His proposed move to Real Madrid this month is off. Real offered £189m to sign Mbappe but walked away after Paris Saint-Germain stalled on the deal. Mbappe is now set to join Real on a free when his contract expires next summer.

How unusual to see a sporting director hold a press conference halfway through deadline day!

Here’s what Monchi had to say about Chelsea’s attempts to sign Jules Kounde...

“The only written, formal offer from Chelsea came last Wednesday, around 5pm,” he insisted.

“We weren’t satisfied with the offer, and it was linked to Chelsea selling a player. It was a decent fee but it didn’t meet our criteria.

”We haven’t spoken with Chelsea since Friday night. We all decided that it was best Jules didn’t travel to Elche. It’s normal for players to be affected by news of any kind. Last year he had the interest from City and now Chelsea this year.

“Kounde’s clause never went up to €90m. It has always been €80m.”

Talks are ongoing over a loan deal with an option or obligation to buy at the end of the season.

Kral's agent is understood to be in London to help move the deal along quickly, but the player himself is with the Czech Republic squad ahead of their World Cup qualifier against Belarus on Thursday and manager Jaroslav Silhavy is thought to be reluctant to let the midfielder leave due to a lack of options.

Tomiyasu to Arsenal dependent on exits

Tuesday 31 August 2021 11:17 , George Flood

Here’s the latest from Standard Sport’s Simon Collings on Arsenal pushing to land Takehiro Tomiyasu before the deadline...

Arsenal are working on a deal for Bologna defender Takehiro Tomiyasu on transfer deadline day.

The Gunners want to sign a right-back before the summer window shuts at 11pm BST on Tuesday night and they have identified the versatile 22-year-old as a prime target.

Tomiyasu is viewed as someone who could operate at right-back or in the heart of defence, while his age profile suits Arsenal’s forward planning.

Tottenham were quoted £20million for the Japanese international earlier this summer before going on to sign Cristian Romero from Atalanta and pursuing Barcelona full-back Emerson Royal.

A move for Tomiyasu is expected to be contingent on outgoings at Arsenal, with Ainsley Maitland-Niles and Hector Bellerin both trying to leave.

Chelsea deals for Kounde and Saul in the balance

Tuesday 31 August 2021 10:51 , George Flood

Chelsea are prepared to take their deadline-day business down to the wire, writes James Robson.

Moves for Jules Kounde and Saul Niguez were left hanging in the balance this morning as Thomas Tuchel remains determined to make late additions to his Champions League-winning squad.

Kounde wants to complete a move to Stamford Bridge, but his hopes of a switch have stalled over Sevilla’s refusal to budge from their £60million asking price.

Tuchel has tracked the France centre-back all summer, with Kurt Zouma’s move to West Ham over the weekend expected to pave the way for his arrival.

But as of this morning Sevilla were adamant the 22-year-old would not be allowed to leave unless their valuation was met in full.

“To continue this journey is incredible for me and my family, and I hope the fans and the club feel the same way.”

The Hammers turned their attentions to Vlasic a few days ago after it became clear that Lingard’s desire to stay and fight for his place at Manchester United, where he is out of contract at the end of the season, had not diminished despite only making one substitute appearance under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer so far this term.

Real Madrid pull plug on Mbappe talks

Tuesday 31 August 2021 09:02 , George Flood

According to outlets including France’s RMC Sport, Real Madrid have withdrawn from negotiations over the French forward after failing to agree a fee with Paris Saint-Germain.

Los Blancos were said to have returned with a second bid for Mbappe worth a total of €180m including add-ons after failing with an initial offer of €160m.

Mbappe - who played and scored twice in Sunday’s Ligue 1 win at Reims, with Lionel Messi also making his debut off the bench - is out of contract at PSG next summer and can sign a pre-contract agreement with another club in January.

Kounde and Saul Niguez to Chelsea?

Tuesday 31 August 2021 08:39 , George Flood

So, what’s the state of play elsewhere in the Premier League early on deadline day?

This could be a very busy day for Chelsea, who have seemingly not given up hope on a late double deal for Sevilla centre-back Jules Kounde and Atletico Madrid midfielder Saul Niguez.

However, reports suggest that ever-changing demands from the two LaLiga clubs has led to frustration on the Blues’ part, so it remains to be seen if either player will arrive at Stamford Bridge before the 11pm BST deadline.

As ever, you can likely expect a number of further exits from Chelsea today as their usual loan army swells back to full size.

He provided one of the most memorable moments in English football when he hammered home the winner against Leicester in the Championship play-off semi-final, capping off a remarkable minute that ended with Watford going to Wembley.

Now, after 11 years and more than 400 games with the Hornets, Troy Deeny is moving on. The 33-year-old forward will be joining Birmingham as a free agent ona two year deal. He shared an emotional message for his supporters:

Maitland-Niles told he’s not going anywhere

Monday 30 August 2021 19:34 , Daniel Gallan

Despite sending out a public plea on Instagram, Arsenal have told 24-year-old Ainsley Maitland-Niles that he’s staying put.

The England international, capped five times by Gareth Southgate, posted an audacious statement on his Instagram page:

““All I wanna do is go where I’m wanted and where I’m gonna play,” he wrote accompanied with three crying emojis.”

But Mikel Arteta has ignored Ainsley Maitland-Niles’ impassioned personal plea to resurrect his career away from north London.

As news of a potential switch to Everton gathered pace on Monday morning, Gunners supporters took to social media to express their disappointment at the prospect of their academy graduate leaving the club ahead of Tuesday’s transfer deadline.

But just a few hours later, having already indicated privately that Maitland-Niles could leave the Emirates, the versatile midfielder was told in an hastily-arranged face-to-face meeting that he was no longer allowed to go.

Daniel James close to permanent Leeds move

Monday 30 August 2021 16:39 , Daniel Gallan

There was always going to be some reshuffling of the pack once Cristiano Ronaldo returned to Old Trafford. Add in the form of Mason Greenwood and the additional signing of Jadon Sancho and there doesn’t seem to be much room for young Daniel James.

As such, the Welsh winger is in talks with Marcelo Bielsa’s Leeds, the same club he almost joined two years ago when he was still with Swansea, in the hope of more first team action.

The 23-year-old started in the 1-0 win over Wolves on Sunday but has been used sparingly by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

He has three years left to run on his deal in Manchester and the expectation is that they will ask for a fee in the region of £20m.

Mbappe repeats that he won’t extend PSG deal

Monday 30 August 2021 12:14 , Marco Giacomelli

Kylian Mbappe has reiterated to Paris Saint-Germain that he plans to leave on a free next summer if he does not join Real Madrid in this window, reports Marca.

Real have bid 180m euros for the forward and although Mbappe wants the move he will not try to force it through this month.

Should he stay, PSG hope to persuade him to sign a new contract but Marca says that will not work as the World Cup winner will run down the final year of that deal.

Mbappe is due to meet up with the France squad later today ahead of their World Cup qualifiers, and Real fear it will be difficult to do a deal once that happens.

Despite the tug-of-war over his future, the 22-year-old played for PSG last night, scoring both goals in their 2-0 win over Reims.

Sevilla playing hardball with Chelsea over Kounde

Monday 30 August 2021 10:28 , Marco Giacomelli

The closing stages of the transfer window are set to be a battle of wills between Sevilla and Chelsea with the Spanish side reportedly sticking to their guns over Jules Kounde.

The France centre-half has a £68million release clause and although Sevilla accept the Blues may not meet that, they expect something close to it.

Chelsea have been looking for a deal at around £43m but, according to Mundo Deportivo, that is a non-starter.

And with the Blues having brought in £29.8m by selling Kurt Zouma to West Ham, it further strengthens Sevilla’s belief they will not sell the 22-year-old at a cut price.

Messi’s calming influence

Monday 30 August 2021 07:21 , Marco Giacomelli

Just two days left of a stunning transfer window.

After all the frenzy surrounding Lionel Messi’s move to Paris Saint-Germain, he finally made his debut last night…and brought an air of calmness to the side, said boss Mauricio Pochettino.

PSG won 2-0 at Reims and they had already scored both those goals by the time the Argentina superstar was brought on in the 66th minute.

But Pochettino believes Messi’s presence had an impact, and said: "I felt it as soon as he came on to the field and his first touches of the ball.

"He brought a calmness to the team. It’s very important to get off to a good start, even for him.

"He was happy and he is well integrated into the group. It was a question of common sense to give him his debut."

Both goals came from Kylian Mbappe although whether he will still be a PSG player by the time the window shuts is debatable with Real Madrid hot on his tail . . .
