It’s reported that the midfielder believes he has a gentlemen’s agreement with Lille that will let him leave should the right bid come in January.

Lille’s president had this to say earlier in the season: “If an offer from a big club arrives, he can leave.”

His time in Italy has not been a success, and Tuttosport claim that Juventus are keen for Ramsey to leave, freeing up his wages.

They could be in luck, as it’s been reported that Newcastle have offered the midfielder a three-year contract worth £150,000-a-week. That may well tempt him to make a return to the Premier League...

Barcelona keen on Laporte

Thursday 23 December 2021 19:20 , Matt Verri

It looks like they are going to sign Ferran Torres this winter, but Barcelona may be looking to take another Man City player to the Nou Camp.

El Nacional report that Xavi is interested in bringing Aymeric Laporte to the club, hoping that the competition with Ruben Dias and John Stones may persuade Laporte to look for a move.

But it’s believed the 27-year-old is happy at City, and content with the amount of game-time Pep Guardiola has given him this season.

Barcelona don’t seem to be letting their financial situation slow them down this window though...

Real Madrid pushed to sign the Frenchman in the summer, and reports suggest they are still the favourites to secure Mbappe.

Still lots to be decided when it comes to his future.

Milinkovic-Savic looks set to stay at Lazio

Thursday 23 December 2021 17:16 , Matt Verri

There has been plenty of talk about Sergej Milinkovic-Savic having a falling out with Lazio boss Mauricio Sarri, and that the midfield wast therefore pushing for a move away.

The 26-year-old has been heavily linked with Man United, who are likely to bolster their midfield options - particularly with Paul Pogba’s future being uncertain. But Milinkovic-Savic has denied he is looking to leave the Italian club.

“I see lot of rumours about me but… I don’t care! I just want Lazio to win,” the midfielder said.

Asked about the situation, his manager Sarri said: “I read one of the biggest fake news, that I had a fight with Milinkovic-Savic. I don’t think so.”

Palace to bring in wide player?

Thursday 23 December 2021 16:17 , Matt Verri

What Patrick Vieira may want to address is the gap left by players who are set to be heading off for the Africa Cup of Nations next month, writes Jack Rosser.

Wilfried Zaha, Jeffrey Schlupp and Jordan Ayew are all set to play at the tournament, which will see players leave shortly after Christmas.

AFCON runs until early February, meaning Vieira will be without some key figures for a significant run of games. Bringing a wide player in on loan, one who is ready to hit the ground running and provide good cover, could be a good option should the opportunity arise, while some cover at left-back would not go amiss.

A loan or permanent exit for striker Jean-Philippe Mateta would certainly suit all parties next month.

Lucas Digne offered way out?

Thursday 23 December 2021 15:32 , Matt Verri

Rafa Benitez and Lucas Digne have reportedly fallen out in recent weeks, with the Frenchman absent from the Everton lineup.

Foot Mercato report that Napoli are considering making a January move for the left-back, taking advantage of the issues he is having at Everton.

The Everton boss has tried to play down any problems between him and Digne, and with the Toffees only having nine outfield players available for their Boxing Day clash, he may be forced to bring the Frenchman back into the side.

“He’s an important player and is working hard during games and training,” Benitez said. “It’s not about the manager or the player, it’s about the fans and the club.

“Lucas is our player. The other players in the market, everyone can talk about that, but my main concern is to concentrate on the players I have and the players that are available.

“Lucas is one of these players, so hopefully he could be available [to face Burnley].”

Tottenham hunting for January bargains as rebuild begins

Thursday 23 December 2021 14:10 , George Flood

Antonio Conte will have the chance to begin reshaping his squad and accelerate Tottenham’s rebuild in January.

Conte has spent his first two months in charge closely assessing his players before delivering his recommendations to Daniel Levy and Fabio Paratici.

Spurs are in the transfer market for a new forward and right wing-back who can offer more in the final third than Emerson Royal, with Matt Doherty among the players who are free to leave.

The club is expected to consider offers for Dele Alli, with a loan exit most likely.

However, Dele offered a timely reminder of what he can offer in the recent draw with Liverpool and Conte has challenged him the make the performance a “starting point” – suggesting he could still have a Spurs future.

Guardiola not disappointed by Ferran sale

Thursday 23 December 2021 13:50 , George Flood

Asked if he was disappointed by Ferran Torres’ impending exit, Pep Guardiola said: “Absolutely not. If you want to leave because you’re not happy here, you believe you’ll be happy in another place, you have to go.

“The career is short, one day it’s over. If he wants to leave, absolutely no disappointment. It’s his desire, I’m happy for him.

“If we had just two or three attacking players then maybe Ferran would think he had more chance to play and stay longer.

“Always I have the feeling that when Barcelona or Real Madrid knock on the door of players then it is difficult to say no. So difficult. They are still the strongest teams in the world in terms of fashion, cities and many reasons.

“He is from Spain, Barcelona knock and I understand why he wants to leave.”

Kulusevski to Arsenal if Pepe exits?

Thursday 23 December 2021 13:03 , George Flood

Mikel Arteta has said Arsenal are “very alert” ahead of the January transfer window, but fans should not expect the kind of spending spree we saw in the summer, writes Simon Collings.

Back then, Arsenal reshaped their squad by coughing up around £140million on new players and that is unlikely to be replicated next month.

Much of Arsenal’s business is likely to be shaped by outgoings, with the future of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang the big unanswered question.

The forward still has 18 months left to run on his contract worth £250,000-a-week and, at 32 years of age, he would surely be hard to sell.

Fellow forwards Alexandre Lacazette and Eddie Nketiah also have uncertain futures, but they look more likely to leave for free next summer rather than in January. Another striker, Folarin Balogun, is set to go out on loan.

Brereton Diaz? Origi? West Ham need new striker, urgently

Thursday 23 December 2021 12:35 , George Flood

West Ham‘s lack of a striker to cover for and compete with Michail Antonio is not something David Moyes needs reminding about, but it is an issue he must fix next month, writes Jack Rosser.

It was unfortunate for West Ham’s talisman to miss the Carabao Cup quarter-final defeat to Tottenham due to a positive coronavirus test, especially considering the forward is fully vaccinated, but the absence of an alternative is an issue of West Ham’s own making and one which cannot continue.

It has been almost a year since the club made the call to sell Sebastien Haller to Ajax. That decision remains the correct one as Haller offered far too little in a West Ham shirt, but the east Londoners cannot go on without a replacement if they want to compete on all fronts.

It was not just the absence of a striker which hurt West Ham against Spurs. Moyes’s squad has also been decimated in defence, but in lacking a focal point going forward the visitors could not take advantage of their second-half dominance.

West Ham put on a strong show given the names missing. As well as Antonio, there is still no Aaron Cresswell while Vladimir Coufal was suspended and Kurt Zouma and Angelo Ogbonna are both long-term absentees.

Kounde still Chelsea’s leading target in January

Thursday 23 December 2021 11:37 , George Flood

Ahead of the opening of the January transfer window, Standard Sport’s team of football writers have put together a selection of brief guides for each club focusing on any potential incoming or outgoing business.

Here’s James Robson on Chelsea:

Thomas Tuchel is happy with his squad, so any major incomings would be a case of summer targets becoming available in the New Year. Jules Kounde remains Chelsea’s leading defensive target.

It would be more a case of departures, but Tuchel is reluctant to lose first-team players, despite doubts hanging over the futures of Hakim Ziyech and Timo Werner. It is believed Tuchel would prefer to keep both until the summer at the earliest.

Malang Sarr is one player who could be sent out on loan, with Italian clubs linked with the centre-back. Ross Barkley is another who has the potential to move but, given injuries suffered by N’Golo Kante and Mateo Kovacic already this season, Tuchel will want as much midfield cover as possible.

 (AFP via Getty Images)
(AFP via Getty Images)

Rising Covid levels will also be a growing consideration for clubs, who may have to face postponements due to outbreaks of cases.

The futures of out-of-contract players will come into even sharper focus from next month, with Antonio Rudiger, Andreas Christensen, Thiago Silva and Cesar Azpilicueta all able to talk to foreign clubs in the New Year.

Watford target Kolasinac loan swoop

Thursday 23 December 2021 09:21 , George Flood

Watford have expressed an interest in Arsenal defender Sead Kolasinac, writes Simon Collings.

The Hornets want to sign a left-back during the January transfer window and Kolasinac is on their list of targets.

The Bosnian has just over six months to run on his contract at Arsenal and he is set to leave for free in the summer.

Watford would be interested in signing Kolasinac on loan for the rest of the season, but Arsenal would need to subsidise his £100,000-a-week wages.

Any deal for the 28-year-old is in its early stages, with Watford still assessing which left-back they will look to sign next month.

The club have shown an interest in Hibernian teenager Josh Doig, but a deal for him is more likely to take place in the summer. Rangers left-back Borna Barisic is another reported target.

Kolasinac, meanwhile, is thought to be open to the idea of joining Watford and continuing to play in the Premier League.

Arsenal handed Jonathan David boost

Thursday 23 December 2021 07:39 , George Flood

Arsenal appear to have been handed a sizeable boost in the race to sign Jonathan David.

The Gunners are thought to be long-term admirers of the Canadian forward, who has also been linked with a host of other clubs across Europe including Real Madrid.

And it looks like David will be on the move sooner rather than later, with his agent confirming that this will be his last season at Lille as he talked up a potential switch to the Premier League.

“For us, the goal is to finish the season in Lille, but it will be his last season there for several reasons. I think the Premier League is a good option for him,” Nick Mavromaras told Radio Canada.

“I think that he likes Spain a lot also because he likes the feeling of the ball and the very technical players. These two leagues are a big priority for him, but nothing is excluded.”

He added: “I can’t say the price today. It’s down to Lille. But in the end, that’s football. Jonathan isn’t going to show it, but he knows he is one of the best young forwards in the world.

“There’s also Erling Haaland who could cost between €75m and €100m… If you want to be part of that list, you have to learn to manage the pressure.”

Diogo Dalot has clearly made an impression on Ralf Rangnick at Man United, as it’s been claimed that the interim boss is blocking any January exit for the full-back.

Italian publication Calcio Mercato report that former United boss Jose Mourinho had an agreement with Dalot to bring him to Roma in the window, with the player having very little game-time under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

But he’s had more joy under the new manager, and it looks like Rangnick wants to keep Dalot at Old Trafford until at least the end of the season.

Southampton are also interested, after they had to sign Willy Caballero on a short-term deal to cover for injuries to Alex McCarthy and Fraser Forster. Should Johnstone be available on a free transfer, he is unlikely to be short of offers.
