Trashy, charming and great at insults - what non-Brits think of the British

Non-Brits have lifted the lid on what they think about British people in an entertaining thread that has proved a hit on Reddit.

The question, “Non-British people, what do you think of the UK and it’s people?”, prompted a range of responses with more than 6,500 comments on it in just one day.

Some were amusing observations, such as: “They are one of the most classy people. They are one of the most trashy people”, while another user wrote: “To this day you guys have some of the most creative insults.”

Another added: “Y’all like to complain about the weather a lot, but I love David Attenborough.”

Other users were full of praise for the British, like ‘TheeLastUnicorn’ who wrote: “They seem like delightful and charming individuals. I’ve only met a handful of people from the UK and they were funny, kind, and charismatic. I would love to visit one day, go to a pub, talk and listen to everyone.”

Some comments were on the slightly more serious side, with one user observing: “On the Internet, you don’t seem to talk about yourselves, I don’t really know the day to day goals and frustration of British people. You’re like that guy in a party that loosens up after a few hours of mostly silence, then says something insightful or funny. Then I never see you again.”

And one touching tale praised Britons for how accommodating they are towards people with disabilities.

User ‘Oystergar’ wrote: “My family and I have been traveling through the England this summer. One of the most surprising things is how accomadating the people have been towards people with disabilities. My brother has downs syndrome and everyone we have met has been kind to him and has helped us find elevators/lifts or has given us shortcuts to get places. It’s also really impressive how many places in the England have discounts for disabled people and their caretakers.”

Other users turned to quotes from others to summarise their impressions of Britons.

One cited Quentin Crisp’s words: “The British do not expect happiness. I had the impression, all the time that I lived there, that they do not want to be happy; they want to be right.”

And other quoted Pink Floyd, writing: “Holding on in quiet desperation is the English way”.
