Travellers have set up camp in a Tamworth town centre car park. A group of up to nine caravans were pictured at the old NCP car park in Spinning School Lane near to the Penny Black pub on Sunday, July 7. They remain there as this story was published.

The council say they are working with police on the matter and will be visiting every day while making welfare checks and “following very specific legal processes”.

One shopper, who did not want to be named, told us: “Well they are no bother to me or my husband and are certainly not making a nuisance of themselves but it does beg the question of if we were to set up on the car park, would we get the same treatment?

"I think not. We would get a parking ticket, wouldn’t we?" Councillor Sarah Daniels, portfolio holder for co-operative council, community partnerships and ASB at Tamworth Borough Council, told us: “We are currently working with local police after being made aware of an unauthorised encampment at the Spinning School Lane car park in Tamworth town centre.

“We are visiting the site to carry out necessary welfare checks. Any stay on unauthorised land is limited and police have issued those at the site with local toleration guidelines.

“Our officers will be visiting the site every day and will be following very specific legal processes. Providing the toleration guidelines are followed, and the group leave in a timely fashion, no further action will be necessary.”

It is understood a group were also at Peelers Way in Two Gates last week having initially left but then returned. It is not known if this is the same group.
