A GROUP of travellers have been spotted camping on a Southampton beauty spot.
This morning, around eight caravans were seen parked on Southampton Common.
One witness said that police were in the area "trying to move them on".
Louise Stretton said: “There's a group of travellers set up on the Common, police there trying to move them on, some of the cars were driving around the walking paths quite quickly trying to get out but the police had blocked the exits.”
It is not known when the group arrived at the site.
A spokesperson for Southampton City Council said: “Southampton City Council has been made aware of an unauthorised encampment on The Common.
"Our Community Safety Team have spoken with the Neighbourhood Policing Team responsible for the area and police are currently in attendance.
“The Community Safety Team will work closely with partners to conduct wellbeing and safety checks in the encampment and to safely resolve the situation minimising any impact on the community.
"Advice to the community is being disseminated to report any criminality or anti-social behaviour to the police on 101.”
