Treasure trove of Star Wars memorabilia found at home of Chewbacca star Peter Mayhew
A haul of Star Wars memorabilia uncovered at the Keighley home of Chewbacca actor Peter Mayhew is set to go under the hammer.
The Star Wars actor, who died in 2019, left behind a treasure trove of Sci-Fi ephemera in the attic.
The discovery included signed photographs, original call sheet memos, shooting schedules, a scrapbook, and a collection of call sheets memos - from Episode IV - A New Hope and The Empire Strikes Back.
It was uncovered by the couple who unknowingly bought the house from the star who played the much-loved Wookie sidekick.
When the couple booked a visit to look round the house, Mayhew appeared at the door.
They didn’t realise he was the actor behind Chewbacca until finding his exciting collection later.
Chris, one of the valuers at Ryedale Auctioneers, went to look at the items and said they were of good provenance.
These items are set to go into auction on February 17 and 18, 2023.
Mayhew played the Wookiee warrior in Star Wars (1977), The Empire Strikes Back (1980), Return of the Jedi (1983), Revenge Of The Sith (2005) and The Force Awakens (2015).
The 7ft 3ins actor had moved to Keighley in 1987 from the south of England, and immediately fell in love with the town.
He made many appearances as Chewbacca to raise money for local charities and became a keen supporter of Keighley Rugby Union Football Club.
Mayhew would later leave the town to move to Texas, USA, with his partner Angelique.
The couple met at a convention in the States and married in Mexico in August 2000.
Speaking at the time about the need to sell his home, he said: "Houses have to be sold, life has to be organised. It's just a question of time. I have sold it now and everything is going through."
The modest former hospital porter said that he had been merely in the right place at the right time.
"I think I made Chewbacca big, but also kind of inquisitive and curious,” he said.
“My brief was that he could do everything but talk.
"He was like a dog who barks softly if he's happy, but loud and high-pitched if he's angry."
The role remained a major part of his life in the USA as he continued to make personal appearances at conventions.
