Trees fall on cars in Cheltenham and on roads across Gloucestershire as strong winds bring chaos

Strong winds brought down trees across Gloucestershire as highways teams battled in challenging conditions with the police also called out to help. A weather warning for rain is in force until 9am today but strong winds also caused problems overnight from Sunday into Monday (September 30).

There were trees reported fallen on cars in Pittville Lawn, Cheltenham Road. The road was closed as police were called and people were told to avoid the area.

Trees also fell in Gloucester, Dursley, Frocester, Rodborough and Birdlip. Road gangs were described as 'extremely busy' as they worked to reopen roads and make areas safe.

The highways team said: "Due to this evenings rainfall and high winds, we have extra gangs on the network to respond to emergency call outs." There were also wet and windy conditions across the wider South West on Sunday. More than an inch of rain falling – 26.1mm – in Bastreet, Cornwall, while winds of 69mph recorded in Berry Head, South Devon, the Met Office said.
