Kevin Bacon will be busting out the heavy artillery once again when Tremors burrows onto TV screens.

US cable channel Syfy is working on an episodic continuation of the 1990 cult classic movie, bringing back Bacon as the man-eating worm killer Valentine McKee.

The project has been in the works for nearly two years at this point, and now Deadline reports that a director has finally been hired to shoot that pilot.

That director is Vincenzo Natali, whose previous credits include Westworld, Luke Cage, The Strain, Orphan Black and six episodes of the potentially soon-to-be revived Hannibal.

Syfy has also confirmed that the Tremors TV series brings us back to Perfection, Nevada 25 years on, as the destructive Graboid worms burst through the surface to devour the town once again.

The citizens of Perfection's only hope is Valentine, who is 25 years older, much more grizzled from decades of alcohol consumption and has bought into the hype from his days as a young hero. Uh oh…

Earlier this year, Kevin Bacon revealed to Digital Spy what drew him back to Tremors after turning down all of the previous made-for-TV sequels over the decades.

"Someone asked me once, 'Are there any characters you've ever played where you'd be interested in revisiting?' and that's really the only one," he explained. "And I've had a lot of characters. The thing is, to me what's interesting about that guy, is that he was doing nothing, working as a handyman.

"And then because of this extraordinary circumstance, he gets to become a hero! So, what happens after you've become an accidental hero? 25 years later. And that's the thing we want to explore in this series."

The Tremors pilot is expected to film in the coming months, so Syfy can make a final decision on whether to commission a full series.
