The trendy suburb named Manchester's 'happiest place to live'

Manchester's 'happiest places to live' have now been revealed, with the popular suburb of Didsbury taking the top spot. The trendy area, which sits just five miles south of Manchester city centre, sits in number one position according to a new poll.

The leafy suburb was the highest rated location in the region in a list of the 70 happiest places to live across the UK. In second place in Manchester was Chorlton, Altrincham was third, Castlefield was fourth and Northern Quarter was voted in fifth place.

Locations were ranked according to the beauty of the surroundings and green spaces, provision of good state schools and affordable housing, as well as access to quality pubs, restaurants, independent shops and cultural attractions.

The findings come from survey with Furniturebox, who polled 5,000 people across each big city and county including Manchester.

With its wide, tree-lined streets and big Victorian houses, Didsbury is one of Manchester’s most coveted neighbourhoods. With excellent schooling, Didsbury High School is an esteemed Ofsted Outstanding secondary, as well as Didsbury Road Primary.

Popular local pubs include The Fletcher Moss on William Street and The Head of Steam on Wilmslow Road, whilst Fletcher Moss Park & Parsonage Gardens is a favoured spot.

Properties in Didsbury had an overall average price of £403,580 over the last year. The majority of sales in Didsbury were flats, selling for an average price of £256,151. Semi-detached properties sold for an average of £498,947, with terraced properties fetching £450,866.

Overall, sold prices in Didsbury over the last year were 1 percent up on the previous year and 3 percent up on the 2021 peak of £392,866, according to Rightmove.

A Furniturebox spokesperson said: “Didsbury is the happiest place to live in Manchester. All 70 places on the list would have been worthy winners and show why the UK is such a wonderful place to live, loved by visitors from all over the world.

“Most of the locations in the top 70 are not the most affluent in their localities and have access to some affordable housing. The survey shows that the happiest places are not defined by wealth but by the quality of life within them.”
