Tributes paid after man's body found on train tracks near station

Tributes have been paid after the body of a man was found on train tracks.

Emergency services were called to the line near Southport railway station following reports of a 'casualty on the tracks'. Paramedics were also in attendance, but the person was pronounced dead at the scene.

Services between Southport and Wigan Wallgate were cancelled as emergency services dealt with the tragic incident, and Sussex Road was also closed between Tithebarn Road and St Luke's Road.

In a statement issued yesterday, a British Transport Police spokesman said: "Officers were called to the area near Southport railway station just before 9am today (23 November) following reports of a casualty on the tracks. Paramedics also attended, and sadly a man was pronounced dead at the scene. Enquiries are ongoing to establish the circumstances leading up to their death."

Readers have paid tribute to the man on Facebook. Susan Ford said: "So very sad, deepest condolences to his family and friends."

Azariah Begum posted: "So heartbreaking." Lisa Clough said: "RIP condolences to the family."

A spokesperson for Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service said: "Fire crews were called to Southport Railway Club on Sussex Road this morning to assist Merseyside Police. Two fire engines arrived on scene at 9.57am and on arrival it was deemed that no fire service action was required. The crews left the scene at 10.07am."
