I tried a £4 breakfast at one of the most welcoming places in Hull
For those in the know, there's a place in east Hull where you can buy hot breakfast wraps for as little as £2.50.
The Freedom Centre is a non-profit charity that supports the community in Preston Road. As well as the community cafe, there is a gym, a library, free WiFi, and meeting rooms and bookable rooms for parties. It also serves as a warm space and donates hygiene packs to anyone in need.
But one of the most highly rated things about The Freedom Centre is the quality of its homemade food. It has a hearty menu of classics such as cottage pie, lasagne, chicken hotpot, and sausage casserole.

It's the sort of food that feels like a warm hug. I visited one morning and looked at the breakfast menu - a small Full English breakfast has a rasher of crispy bacon, a sausage, a free-range egg, a grilled tomato, mushrooms, and toast with real butter for £4.00.
For £1.50, you can double up on the bacon, sausage, and toast. There are also breakfast wraps for £2.50 and breakfast muffins for £3.50 with fillings such as sausage, bacon, jack cheese, and egg.
I went for the £4 vegetarian breakfast option and because they were out of veggie sausages they gave me an extra free-range egg. As I waited for my order, I drank my cup of tea and observed the surroundings.
The cafe has a welcoming feel. It's pleasantly warm, has simple furnishings, and everyone is friendly. Nearby in the library, a parents group were singing nursery rhymes together.
Within about seven minutes, the food was ready which surprised me because it was quite busy. I got the impression the cafe is a well-oiled machine and the chefs are rarely overwhelmed.
I was delighted with the food. At the price, I hadn't expected much but my fried eggs (you can also order poached or scrambled) were cooked perfectly with a set white and a runny yolk - ideal for the toast.
And the real butter that came with the toast was delicious. I also enjoyed the flavour of the grilled tomato and the sautéd mushrooms. Even the baked beans hit the spot - I thought the bean-to-juice ratio was perfect and hate it when they are dribbly.
By the end of breakfast, I was absolutely smitten with The Freedom Centre and was looking forward to going back. Next time, I'm going to try a jack cheese wrap with baked beans.
