We tried Bobby's Salt & Pepper in Huddersfield and one thing was missing

The new Packhorse Centre's food court opened to the public around noon on Friday and by five past we were standing in the queue outside Bobby's Salt & Pepper.

I had my eye on a bit of spicy Mexican-style food from nearby Birria Boyz but they had a shortage of cheese and the shutter kept rising and falling, so maybe next time. But my yearning for some spice was soon satisfied by Bobby's, which specialises in Chinese-style food - and plenty of it as we soon found out.

We ordered two portions of 'Box 3' which consisted of salt and pepper chicken, king prawns, salt and pepper chips and fried noodles. With a couple of cans of pop, the bill came to just over £24.

Within minutes my tongue and lips were gently tingling thanks to some fresh green and red chillies which had been nicely sliced so as not to be too overpowering. My dining partner, a huge fan of spicy foods, told me not to be such a wuss, calling the chilli heat nothing to get hot under the collar about.

We both agreed that the prawns, chicken and noodles had been nicely seasoned and cooked, with very little oil left behind.

The portions were generous and certainly good value for around £10. We both enjoyed the ambience and general vibe of the food court.

The furniture was functional and the lighting was about right if you enjoy looking at your food and taking photos of it, as I do. I was thinking that a few prints for the walls, and maybe even some plants, would add a bit of colour.

Our meal came in a cardboard tray and we were given a flimsy wooden fork. It wasn't up to the job of slicing a mighty chunk of chicken.

"I wish we could have some proper cutlery," remarked my dining partner. Although we didn't mind the cardboard tray or the food court's functional furniture, we both missed having a proper knife and fork.

Bobby's Salt & Pepper is one of several food outlets in the new Rate My Takeaway food court.

I will certainly be back, next time for a taste of Mexico.
