I tried a breakfast spot not everyone knows and what they served me was a relief
I have a complicated relationship with breakfast. I like to fully wake up and have time to fully enjoy a meal, which is why I often opt for a quick banana on days when I’m working.
My days off tend to be on weekends and one of the things I most look forward to is enjoying some scrambled eggs on toast. But going out for breakfast can be a bit hit and miss in my opinion.
Many of the highest-rated places are at their busiest at this time. If you don’t have a booking, you might have to spend a while waiting for a table, which is not ideal.

However, the stars aligned earlier this month when I had a Tuesday off work and time to myself. I decided to pay Space a visit for some brunch.
I’ve been to the bar and restaurant on the corner of Aigburth Road and Mersey Road before but haven’t found the time to visit in a long time. I’ve also never had the chance to try out its full English breakfast before.
I was relieved when I walked through its doors shortly after 12pm on Tuesday to find there were a few spare tables. It was still relatively busy and lively with families having a bite to eat and old friends catching up.
I don’t often get a full English when I go out, but felt it was justified given I hadn’t eaten yet. Space’s version, entitled the Full Monroe, comes with two eggs, two rashers of back bacon, two sausages, toast beans, a hash brown, a black pudding and tomato.
I didn’t face a long wait for my food and I was delighted when I saw my plate. Beans can be a bit of a pain when they spill onto your other food items but thankfully Space places theirs in a pot to keep it all separate. I can’t share any complaints about the quality of the food. The fried eggs were cooked perfectly and bacon was lovely and soft.
However, the one mistake I made was overestimating my appetite. I ended up being so full I couldn’t finish either the black pudding or the tomato. This meal combined with some juice came to £15.35, which I feel is a reasonable price to pay with all that I ordered.
It may be easy to look past Space given the wealth of breakfast spots on nearby Lark Lane. But if you’re in the area it’s well worth a try in my view.
There’s plenty of other options too, including toasties and scrambled eggs, as well as a full evening menu and bar. It's open from 9am every day and on Friday and Saturday closes at 11pm.
There’s even an outside courtyard when the weather is nicer. Other spots may be more well-known, but if you’re after good food and drinks in a stylish venue, Space has got plenty to offer.
