We tried Edinburgh Christmas market's viral hot chocolate to see if it is worth the hype
The Christmas markets are in full swing in Edinburgh with thousands of locals and visitors descending on them.
Along with the attractions and gift stalls, the food and drink stands have been gathering a lot of attention on social media, with many taking to TikTok to document what they've tried. For those looking for a hot drink to warm up, hot chocolate is a go-to for many and large queues have been seen at one stall in particular in East Princes Street Gardens.
We headed down to the markets on a freezing Thursday afternoon to see if the popular hot chocolate, costing nearly £6, is worth the hype.

Heading to the stall, it is easy to spot due to its blue signage. They list their drinks and include flavoured hot chocolates.
The luxury hot chocolate stall offers a range of beverages from a 'simply hot chocolate', costing £4.80, to a deluxe chocolate which comes with all the trimmings.
For £5.80, customers receive a cup of hot chocolate, with cream, marshmallows, flake and a crumbly biscuit topping. Unfortunately, despite appearances, it left us a little underwhelmed.
We were quickly served a cup of hot chocolate with cream, two straws and a spoon. The flake was placed in the middle and it looked more like a 99 ice cream rather than a classic winter warmer drink.
With straws poking out like a pair of antennae, and the spoon, there was a lot going on with the beverage. It felt like a sort of balancing act and I was cautious of the hot chocolate spilling out over the edge. Upon tasting it, it became apparent the beverage wasn't actually that hot. It was warm, which quickly cooled down further due to the cream.
The marshmallows were hidden under the cream which meant they also melted quickly. The gooey little treats at the end of the drink could then be scooped up with the spoon. As for the taste, the hot chocolate itself tasted... simply fine.
It didn't taste as indulgent as I would have expected for £5.80. I expected it to taste like the flake had been melted down but the drink itself tasted similar to the supermarket bought tub I have at home.
The best part was the flake which felt like the biggest treat. With such a big sweet-tooth, I wish the drink was more chocolatey.
Elsewhere in the markets, other stalls are serving hot chocolate for £4 and another stall called Coffee and Donuts are selling a simple hot chocolate for just £3.
