We tried fish and chips from a historic 'shoppe' in Gloucester
If you’re thinking of a takeaway this weekend, why not try Ye Olde Restaurant & Fish Shoppe in Gloucester. Fish and chips is a British favourite enjoyed straight out of the paper and around the table alike.
The average price for a portion of fish and chips has risen more than 50 per cent in recent times. And the classic takeaway has seen the biggest price increase of some of the UK’s most popular takeaways.
The industry is up against it with rising costs, so why not support your local chippy? We tried the popular chip shop in Hare Lane and were not disappointed.

It was a great choice. The take away and licensed restaurant was established in 1946.
While the black white timber framed grade II-listed building was built around 1530 and was a merchant’s house. The three storey building with jettied upper floors underbuilt on the ground floor is full of character.
If you’re ordering a takeaway, make sure you take cash. They only accept cards if you’re having a sit down meal in the restaurant upstairs.
The chips were tasty and we were pleased with the cod. If you like mushy peas and curry sauce, I would recommend it.
Haddock is £8.90, large cod is £8 while plaice £8,80 and ten pieces of scampi is £6.40. Regular chips cost £3.50 and a large portion is £4.50.
A cone of chips costs £3. Mushy peas and curry sauce costs £2 each.
A portion of chicken is £5 while jumbo sausage and a batter sausage is £2.60 and £2.70. Overall it’s a great option for fish and chips.
I would give them a nine out of ten rating. If we tried it again we’d try to eat in at the restaurant.
The only downside with the takeaway is they sadly don’t wrap the chips in a copy of The Citizen.
