I tried a new foodie haven in Leyton and it's the best food I've had in ages

Hidden in Leyton’s High Road, Bamboo Mat is a foodie haven aiming to elevate dining experiences from Central London to Leyton. Their food is easily some of the best I’ve tasted in ages.

What sets this restaurant apart is its ever-evolving taster menu, shaped by the feedback and preferences of its customers. According to the owner, Bamboo Mat strives to foster a sense of community by cultivating a loyal customer base, providing a cosy neighbourhood atmosphere, and crafting a menu tailored to the preferences of its regular guests.

I was invited to check out their standard Taster Menu, and I could feel Leyton's strong community spirit and the owner’s passion for it. He kept chatting about how Leyton deserves a slice of Central London's upscale dining scene and even recommended other local spots I should visit.

The staff definitely added warmth to the whole experience. The manager walked me through each dish, explaining flavours and cooking techniques, which was super helpful since some combos were new to me.

I kicked off this food journey with two Peruvian starters: their signature sea bass and tiger milk ceviche, plus a Tuna and fish eggs Tostada. The explosion of flavours, especially with the zesty lemon and kick of Aji Amarillo spice, left me grinning from ear to ear.

Moving on to mains, the Chicken Teriyaki skewers stole the show with their tender texture and rich, smoky flavour. The meat practically melts in your mouth, and it’s perfectly complemented by the savoury teriyaki sauce.

I also tried their exquisite sea bass, served with mushy peas and a refreshing mint sauce. It struck the perfect balance between crispy skin and tender, fresh fish meat.

Their sushi selection was also a highlight, with the Canada Maki standing out: this roll combines smoky sea eel, salmon, cream cheese, and crisp cucumber in one bite. Plus, each sushi roll is expertly complemented by their homemade soy sauce, elevating the dining experience to new heights.

To accompany the meal, I sampled some of their custom cocktails and mocktails. Their interpretations of classic cocktails like the Pisco Sour and the Yuzu Blossom were exceptional, showcasing a delicious fusion of Peruvian and Japanese flavours.

Furthermore, during a conversation with the manager about upcoming cocktails for the next season, Amaretto was mentioned. Upon noticing my enthusiasm for the drink, he served me an off-menu Amaretto Pisco Sour, which perfectly encapsulated Bamboo Mat's customizable nature.

So, if you’re on the hunt for an unforgettable dining experience in Leyton, Bamboo Mat should be your top pick. It’s more than just a meal; it’s a dive into the area’s vibrant food scene and community vibe.
