I tried Friday fish and chips at a Hull chippy so popular it had people queuing out the door

As takeaways go, fish and chips are the traditional British choice.

There are dozens of takeaways in Hull offering a chippy tea - we really are spoiled for choice - and one of them is the popular East Park Chippy in 520 Holderness Road. It is rated an impressive four-and-a-half stars on Google and customers praised the freshness of the fish, the low prices, and the gluten-free options for people with Coeliac disease.

I decided to visit with a friend one Friday night and have a scenic meal next to the lake in East Park before the summer ends and the nights draw in. There was a long queue leading out the door and people eating in too.

The staff were polite and very efficient despite how busy it was. Despite there being about five customers in front of me, I was able to order after only about five minutes of waiting which was a nice surprise.

We chose a pattie meal and a medium haddock and chips meal to share. The staff were very attentive and asked if we would like it wrapped or unwrapped and offered to add salt and vinegar.

With our meals in hand, we set off for the park and sat down on a quiet bench about a 15-minute walk away. The haddock meal went down a real treat and you get so much value for money. The fish at least 10 inches long and was much nicer than anything you could buy in a supermarket and the chips were fluffy and fresh and not too oily.

The pattie was mouthwatering-delicious. It was so crisp on the outside but the potato on the inside was almost creamy and the flavour was like sage and onion stuffing balls - my favourite.

However, the only small negative was that the chips with the pattie meal did not taste quite the same as the one with the fish meal. But the staff were nice and I'm 99 per cent sure they'd have replaced the chips - but we still had plenty of food to share between us and didn't want to queue up again.

The pattie alone was so massive it could have done for a meal without the chips, so I was content with that. Overall, I would go back because the fish and patties are excellent.
