I tried the new Huddersfield Asian supermarket and only have two gripes

There were 50,000 products to choose from but I was only really interested in some fresh baked goods.

Umrah Supermarket, which opened on Friday in Huddersfield town centre, isn't as large as some big superstores but they seem to have shoehorned in a lot of food and drinks.

The aisles were packed on launch day, with people eager to sample some free cake and super sweet baklava. The retailer specialises in foods from Asia and the Middle East, including Turkish and Kurdish produce.

I tried some börek, or burek, which is a family of pastries found in Ottoman cuisine. The pastry was thin and flaky. The little roll contained spinach and cheese which tasted delicious. I could imagine popping into Umrah to grab some for breakfast.

I also sampled some lahmacun, which is Middle Eastern flatbread topped with minced meat. Think of it as Turkish-style pizza. It's certainly as tasty as pizza. The baklava was the perfect dessert, the pastry crisp and the filling as sweet as honey (which it probably was).

Umrah will be a big success in Huddersfield, I would imagine, as there's a lot of people who are already au fait with most of these products, but also many more, like me, who are keen to find out more and try new things.

I only had two minor gripes on the day. The main one was the length of the queue for the tills. It was so long I had to grab my food samples and dash before the car parking ticket ran out.

And sadly I couldn't find any fresh samosas, pakoras or bhajis. I was reassured by a staff member that the bakery was planning to extend its range in due course. This news came as a big relief.

I had to dash so I didn't get chance to sample the various frozen delicacies, from samosas to curries, nor any of the fresh nuts, but I will certainly be back for another look.
