I tried new Huddersfield cafe where the condiments caught my eye along with the pork pies

Pork pie, mushy peas and chips was the 'special' on the menu on the day I visited Northgate Bites and it would have been rude not to.

The newly-opened Almondbury business calls itself 'your favourite cafe' and was pretty busy when I called in for lunch on Wednesday this week. I hesitated for a second because I am quite particular about pork pies because once you've had the best (and there are several in Huddersfield vying for that crown), it's impossible to settle for anything less.

Thankfully, Northgate Bites source their pies from Dyson Meats, a butcher in Northgate, just a few paces down the road, and they are mouth-wateringly good.

Northgate Bites passed my condiment test, with the shop opting for HP, Heinz and Sarsons, rather than any generic/cheap brands. The mint sauce was from Bradford-based Morrisons which was fine by me.

It was a hearty meal, fit for a scaffolder and too large a portion for a pen-pusher like me. The lovely lady behind the counter bagged up my left over chips which I was only too happy to take away.

There's an extensive menu that includes various breakfasts including a veggie option. The prices seemed to be good value for money. My pie and pies, along with a soft drink, cost £7.35.

The cafe interior has comfy chairs and glass-topped tables, with a nice view from the main window onto Northgate.

There are black and white photos of Almondbury on the wall and a couple of pictures of nearby Castle Hill. There are sweet treats available too, some of them supplied by Maughans Bakery, Mirfield.

The cafe is aiming to have different 'specials' every day but this is a work in progress as they are still finding their feet after being open just three weeks.

Northgate Bites is open every day apart from Sundays (from 9am to 2pm) and can be found at 131 Northgate, Almondbury, in the premises formerly occupied by Ambry's Community Cafe.
