I tried Hull's new high-end steakhouse - and it's unreal

A glitzy new steakhouse recently opened its doors in Hull.

One Steakhouse & Lounge has taken over a long abandoned 1930s building overlooking the River Hull. After a decade of neglect the Witham building has been given a new lease of life as a high-end restaurant - and I went to check it out.

Walking up the steps to the premises, the stairway alone told me that this building had history, and it was instantly recognisable as a former bank. Though it's near a century old, the inside was sleek and modern - a marble interior with a mix of golden décor, instantly gave off all the right vibes.

The only previous time I've been in a steak restaurant was the well-hyped Moo Moo in Krakow, which I was told was the best in all of Poland. Admittedly, I left there a bit underwhelmed, and I was unsure how this would compare.

The menu includes Sirloin, T-Bone and Fillet, ranging in price from £27.95 to £49.45.

I went for the small Rib Eye, medium rare, with all the trimmings (with the exception of mushrooms). A loud "ding" from the kitchen hinted that the food was ready, and it was handed over by the professional waiting staff.

The trimmings included a sauce of choice, which of course had to be peppercorn, shallots and potatoes. The 227g, 32-day aged steak was sizzling on the plate, and I immediately went in for a cut - nearly forgetting the obligatory pic in the process.

The steak knife cut the meat effortlessly, and the first bite was unreal. The beauty of medium rare means it retains maximum taste, as well as staying tender. The second bite, now joined by a dosing of peppercorn sauce just added an elevated level of flavour. There's a reason why that sauce is so synonymous with a lump of steak - regardless of the cut.

With the mains promptly wolfed down in delight, the potatoes acted as a great way to mop up any remaining sauce and salt. Admittedly, when I sat down and saw the prices I thought "blimey," but for just shy of £29 for a meal it more than justifiable for a more than enjoyable dining experience in a high-end restaurant.
