I tried Liverpool's new bakery and the queue was totally worth it

A new bakery has opened in Liverpool and it's already so popular that there are queues out the door.

Baker Jamie Heffey had previously hosted pop-ups at food markets across the region - but he decided the time had come to open a permanent venue.

Pastille bakery opened this month in Unit 9 on Gibraltar Row, off Bath Street and Waterloo Road (opposite Costco).

Jamie's pop-ups would regularly sell out, so the ECHO decided to take a trip down to his new home, to see what all the fuss is about.

Walking from the ECHO offices to Pastille, I already passed around a dozen people with boxes from the bakery, and despite setting off just before 10am, I was worried I might have left it too late. When I arrived at the unit, a queue snaked outside as people waited to get their hands on some sweet treats.

I spoke to a woman in the queue, who said she brought her grandchildren last week at 1pm and it had sold out. So it’s safe to say Pastille's goodies are very much in demand.

Inside the bakery customers can find everything from egg custard tarts and pain au chocolat to cereal milk blondies and desserts which look like pieces of art - including the apple and white chocolate tart with a lifelike green apple mousse. For those who prefer savoury options, the bakery sells bread. There is also coffee and a selection of jams and honey on offer.

I went for the pistachio cruffin, having already eyed it up on their Instagram - and it looked delicious. A 'cruffin', as you may have gathered, is a cross between a croissant and a muffin. The pistachio cream on top was quite thick and really tasty, and the sugar on top added an extra sweet element.

At £4.50 per cruffin, I thought that it was a good Friday treat, and I think I will be going back there soon to brave the queue and get another. You can watch the video above to see the cruffin up close.

Previously, baker Jamie told the ECHO: "We're buzzing to finally open. We've always had a great response from people at pop-ups and markets and we usually sell out.

"Everything is gone by the end of the day. The soft launch sold out too so it gives us a nice idea of what to expect with the venue. We're excited for everyone to see what we've done with the place and see where we go from here."

You can find Pastille Bakery at Unit 9, Gibraltar Row, L3 7HJ from Friday - Sunday.
